Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Southern College baseball started strong but could not stop hot bats as Kentucky Wesleyan took a 17-8 decision on Wednesday night at Rodda Stadium at Henley Field. The No. 28 Moccasins (11-7) gave up 14 runs to the Panthers (5-5) in the last three innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Panthers went up 1-0 in the first inning after a Joseph Burke long ball to left field.
- FSC responded with three runs in the second inning. Alan Burnsed singled to left and brought up Tor Sehnert, who hit a ball to the shortstop who committed a throwing error. Burnsed scored after a throwing error from right field. Cody Duke then walked and Dylan Costa brought both home with a 2 RBI double to left.
- Burke homered to left again for the Panthers in the third inning to make it 3-2.
- Jacob Teter's sixth dinger of the year put the Mocs up 4-2 to lead off the bottom frame of the third.
- A throwing error by Kyler Marquis put Brayden Sisson on for Kentucky Wesleyan, alter scoring after a wild pitch, single by Chase Andrews and RBI groundout from Ben Wilcoxson.
- FSC loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth on a single, walk and hit by pitch. Marquis hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Vaun Brown to put the Moccasins up, 5-3.
- Mocs pitching struggled to find the plate in the seventh, allowing four walks in addition to a hit that scored three, giving Kentucky Wesleyan a 6-5 lead.
- The Panthers added more in the eighth, with seven hits scoring eight runs.
- FSC stayed in the game with a showing in the bottom of the inning. Burnsed singled past third base to get on and Christian Maglich walked. Burnsed scored on a passed ball and Maglich came home on a Duke sacrifice fly.
- Kentucky Wesleyan added three more in the ninth to make it 17-7. Burke's third homer of the night added two while Bradley Furhop came home on a groundout.
- FSC added one more in the ninth as Teter came home on a Burnsed sac fly. Kentucky Wesleyan took the game, 17-8.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Moccasins are now 4-1 all-time against the Panthers.
- The Moccasins lead the nation with 32 home runs this season. Burnsed and Teter lead the conference and are 16th in the nation with six bombs each. The duo also are the only Moccasins with an OPS above 1.000, with Burnsed at 1.230 and Teter at 1.095
- FSC is currently averaging 1.78 home runs per game and is on pace to hit 87 long balls this season. That number would break the previous record of 81 set in 2017.
- Teter now leads the conference and is fifth in the nation with 19 walks earned.
