Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Southern College baseball rebounded with a dominant win on Saturday afternoon, winning 9-3 over Northwood at John Rodda Stadium at Henley Field. The No. 28 Moccasins (12-8) allowed only five hits to the Timberwolves (4-6), and silenced the NU bats for a majority of the middle innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A Cole Brooks single through the right gap started the Timberwolves off quickly. A double-play ball gave the Mocs an opportunity to get out of the inning, but a muffed catch at second kept the runners on. A double-steal put Timberwolves on second and third, but three strikeouts from Brant Brown got FSC out of the frame.
- The Moccasins went up 1-0 in the bottom of the inning as Kyler Marquis singled up the middle and Jacob Teter brought him home on a looper over the glove of the first basemen.
- With two outs in the top of the second, Northwood rallied with a hit by pitch and two singles that tied that game at one.
- Northwood threatened in the third with runners on first and second with none out, but a groundout to second, a popout to shallow left and a flyout to left ended the threat.
- A leadoff double to left in the bottom half of the inning for Vaun Brown set him in position for an RBI groundout by Dylan Costa that put the Mocs up by one.
- FSC added two more in the fourth inning. Teter hit his second single of the game and came home on a triple by Zach Scott. Zach Diewert lifted a sac fly to center that brought home Scott and made the game 4-1 in favor of the home side.
- Vaun Brown walked to start the fifth for the Mocs, with Santino Miozzi joining him after being hit by a pitch. Costa hit a sac bunt to advance the runners and a sacrifice fly by Marquis put the Mocs up 5-1.
- Brown contributed again in the bottom of the sixth inning as he blasted his fifth home run of the year and brought in Diewert and Christian Maglich to give his side an 8-1 margin.
- Brant Brown finished his outing at the end of the seventh. Brown allowed just one earned run and four hits, with no hits allowed in his final four innings, and struck out five batters with just two walks given.
- The Moccasins threatened yet again in the seventh, as the home side loaded the bases on an error and two hit by pitches. The third-straight HBP by Northwood brought in Maquis and moved the score to 9-1.
- Two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for the Timberwolves, with a Michael Karam double to left center scoring two. NU sent Strickland home but a 941 putout cleaned up one out. Two straight groundouts got the Mocs out of the inning.
- Logan Verrino closed out the game for the Moccasins, striking out two and forcing a flyout to end the game, 9-3, in favor of the Moccasins. Logan Lee moved to 0-3 for the season, while Brown improved to 3-1.
