Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Southern College baseball held Northwood University to just three hits as the Moccasins earned the series with an 8-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Rodda Stadium at Henley Field. The No. 28 Mocs (13-8) score four runs early and four runs late to seal the series over the Timberwolves (4-8).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Thomas Spinelli started out hot, throwing eight-straight strikes to retire three batters in the top of the first on two strikeouts and a flyout.
- A fielding error at short and a walk to Jacob Teter put runners on for Zach Scott, who brought in the first run of the game on a single to center. Zach Diewert hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Teter and gave the Mocs a 2-0 lead.
- Vaun Brown walked to lead off the bottom of the second and Santino Miozzi doubled to right center to put the Mocs up 3-0. Dylan Costa added one more with an RBI groundout to second.
- A walk to Austin Montas-Burt and a single by Kyle Ziegler gave the Timberwolves a scoring opportunity that they cashed in with a two-RBI double by Matt Magno in the third inning.
- Both teams had quiet bats for the next couple innings until the bottom of the sixth, where the Moccasin bats hit hard. Christian Maglich hit his fifth homer of the year to start the inning. Back-to-back walks to Diewert and Tor Sehnert gave the Mocs runners, who both advanced on a Brown sac bunt. Singles by Miozzi and Costa brought in both runs and gave the Moccasins a 7-2 lead.
- Teter added another with his seventh home run of the year to lead off the seventh inning.
- Michael DeSanti pitched phenomenally to end the game, with just one walk and no hits allowed in two innings with two strikeouts, giving the Mocs an 8-2 win. Spinelli earned his first win of the year and Drew Schultz moved to 1-1 for Northwood.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Moccasins are now 2-1 all-time against the Timberwolves.
- Mocs pitching had a great outing, as Spinelli allowed just two hits and struck out five in five innings while both Collin Camarigg and DeSanti pitched two lights-out innings, with Camarigg allowing one hit and DeSanti allowing none.
- DeSanti maintains a perfect ERA, having allowed no runs in 12 innings and seven appearances this season. Spinelli now has a 0.98 ERA in 18.1 innings pitched and 25 strikeouts.
- Teter is now tied with Alan Burnsed with seven home runs this season. Both lead the conference and are tied nationally at seventh in that metric.
- The Moccasins lead the nation with 37 home runs this season and is currently averaging 1.76 home runs per game and is on pace to hit 86 long balls this season. That number would break the previous record of 81 set in 2017.
- Miozzi had a great day at the plate, hitting 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run.
- FSC has hit 16 sacrifice flies this season, leading the conference and second in the country.
- Teter continues to lead the conference and is third in the nation with 22 walks earned.
