Men's Soccer Sees 2021 Season Come To An End At The SSC Tournament Quarterfinals

LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Florida Southern College men's soccer team saw their 2021 season come to an end on Monday as they fell to Nova Southeastern during the quarterfinal round of the Sunshine State Conference Championship game. The No. 5 seated Mocs fell 3-0 to the No.4 Sharks to finish the season with a 6-8-3 overall record. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nova Southeastern started off strong with back-to-back corners
  • The first corner was kicked away by the Mocs defense but the second corner set the Sharks up for a goal to lead the way 1-0 at the 22nd minute.
  • Nova continued to put the pressure on Southern but Mars Gohier put out for a diving catch to not increase the Sharks lead.
  • During the 38th minute of play, Leoluca Diefenbach took a shot after a foul but NSU keepers made a diving playing to keep their 1-0 lead going into the second half. 
  • Just two minutes after the start of the second half, the Sharks returned with the same pressure with a shot going over the net. 
  • FSC answered back with the same shot over the net from freshman, Luca Bernoth
  • At the 53:32 mark, the Sharks increased their lead to make it a 2-0 advantage. 
  • The Mocs put another shot on goal from Ethan Higgins, but the NSU keeper was there to make the save. 
  • FSC continued to try and put a goal in the net to cut NSU lead, but it was the Sharks that found the back of the net for the final time in the 83rd minute to advance to the next round of the tournament. 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • At the half, the Mocs were outshot by the Sharks 13-2 with the twos shots coming from James Meehan and Diefenbach. 
  • The teams combined for a total of 31 shots, 26 from the Sharks and five from the Mocs only two being on goal for FSC.
  • Three Mocs finished the night with yellow cards as Ryan Duffey earned his in the first half followed by Christoph Gums and Jake Starling earning theirs in the second half.
  • FSC combined for a total of 14 fouls, while Nova tagged on six.
  • Gohier earned a new season-high playing the entire 90 minutes between the polls collecting nine saves.
