MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's basketball team lost a heart breaker, 79-70, in double overtime, at Barry University on Monday night. Florida southern drops to 1-2 on the season, while Barry improves to 2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter
· Florida Southern scored the first points of the game, not even a minute into the game, as junior Sanya Ratnikava made a running layup. Shortly thereafter, sophomore Mackenzie Steele made the score 4-0 on a pull up jumper.
· Minutes later, with Barry leading 5-4, junior Ashley Shell grabbed an offensive rebound and made a short jumper to put the Mocs back on top, 6-5.
· After the Bucs 5-0 run, both teams struggled to find the basket, and the hosts took a 10-6 lead after the first ten minutes.
2nd Quarter
· Sophomore Aubrey Burke opened the second quarter by going hard to the basket, making a layup to get the Mocs back into the scoring column.
· A minute later, classmate Chyna Bullen made a power move in the lane, converting a short jumper to tie the score at ten points apiece.
· Junior Marta Aranda made Southern's first three-pointer of the game at the 7:40 mark, followed by a bucket from Ratnikava, and the Mocs led 15-13 with 6:07 to play in the half.
· Minutes later, after a short Bucs run, Shell took a bounce pass from Aranda in the lane, making the score 22-19 Barry, with just about two minutes to play.
· Ratnikava would hit a triple with just under 20 seconds to go, before the Bucs made a running jumper as time expired, and Barry led, 27-23, at the half.
· Through 20 minutes, FSC shot 29%, with Ratnikava pacing the team with seven points. Shell added five, while Burke contributed four.
· The Mocs grabbed nine offensive rebounds in the first half. Shell's nine total rebounds led all players.
3rd Quarter
· Barry would quickly build a six-point lead, before Ratnikava went on a personal 4-0 run the trim the Bucs' lead to just two, at 32-30.
· Minutes later, With the Bucs back up by seven, a 6-0 run for the Mocs made the score 37-36, with 3:40 remaining. Freshman Sara Wohlgemuth had four points in that run.
· With 2:10 to go, Steele's driving layup tied the score at 40.
· The teams traded free throws down the stretch, as the host Bucs took a 46-43 lead entering the final period.
4th Quarter
· Aranda knocked down a three-pointer on the Mocs first possession, followed by a Burke layup and a Wohlgemuth three, and the Mocs drew even at 53 points apiece at the 7:55 mark. Once again the Mocs drew to a tied score, but could not take the lead.
· Minutes later, after a Barry score, Ratnikova hit a three to tie the score at 54 each.
· The Mocs would once again regain the lead at 5:20, as Wohlgemuth made a pair of free throws. Southern was back in the lead, 56-54.
· The lead lasted just over a minute, before Barry made back-to-back buckets to retake the lead.
· With just over one minute to play, Steele hit a long-range three from the right side to tie the score at 59.
· A held ball gave possession to the Mocs, who could not score. Barry was unable to produce points on its final possession, and we were headed into bonus basketball.
· At the end of regulation, Ratnikava led FSC with 14 points, followed by Wohlgemuth (13) and Steele (12).
1st Overtime
· The Mocs would take the lead early, as Steele made a pair of free throws on Southern's first possession.
· The teams traded baskets, with Burke making an uncontested layup midway through the extra session, putting FSC up, 65-63.
· A Barry basket was disallowed on an offensive foul, and the Mocs stayed out front, 65-63.
· Barry would finally tie the score at 65 with just over one minute to play.
· After a FSC miss, Barry grabbed the rebound and went the length of the floor for a fast-break layup, grabbing the lead, 67-65.
· Ratnikava responded by making a pair of free throws with 37.2 seconds remaining, knotting the score at 67.
· Tough Florida Southern defense forced a Barry turnover, setting up an opportunity for Southern to win the game, with 5.3 seconds remaining.
· Coach Betsy Harris took her final timeout, and drew up the play. However the final shot of the quarter fell short, and we headed into a second overtime session.
2nd Overtime
· The Bucs jumped out to a quick four point lead, before a Shell layup trimmed the lead back to two, 71-69.
· From there, the hosts would go on an 8-1 run to clinch the game, 79-71.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
· Ratnikava led the Mocs with 18 points on the night, as Wohlgemuth and Steele each added 13. Shell, who led the team with 15 rebounds, added nine points. Wohlgemuth added 10 rebounds, for FSC's sole double-double.
· FSC held Barry to just 38% shooting on the night, while forcing 15 turnovers.
· The game saw 11 ties and nine lead changes.
