Box Score 2 MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Florida Southern College baseball team swept their doubleheader against the Florida Tech Panthers in Melbourne on Saturday, 8-6 and 6-3. With the victories, FSC improves to 9-6 overall and 8-5 in Sunshine State Conference play. Florida Tech never led in either game.
First baseman
Jacob Teter saw his Iron Man streak come to an end, as he did not start game two of the double header.
Teter had started all 142 team games for the Mocs since opening day of his freshman year in 2018. His 142 consecutive starts to begin a career are the second most in program history behind Robbie Shield who started all 167 games the Mocs played from 2007-09.
HOW IT HAPPENED
IN GAME ONE (Mocs 8 - Panthers 6, 9 Innings)
- The Mocs starting things off with a run in the first as shortstop Grady Maguire drove in centerfielder Vaun Brown with a single to right.
- FIT answered back with a run in their half of the first as Jakob Newton hit a solo homer off of Mocs starter Jarrod Cande.
- FSC would take the lead for good as Brown drove in designated hitter Cody Duke on an infield single in the second.
- The Mocs offense opened things up in the third, adding five runs and taking a commanding 7-1 lead. Connor Berry and Dylan Costa both tripled in the inning while Brown blasted his Sunshine State Conference leading ninth home run.
- The Panthers added a run in the fifth but that was all they would score against Cande. The Mocs righty picked up the win and a quality start after allowing two runs over six innings of work. He struck out four while scattering five hits.
- Brown would once again add to his home run total as he hit his second solo home run of the game in the sixth, giving him ten in the team's first 14 games.
- Senior J.J. Niekro threw two innings of relief, while Mike Pelaez worked the start of the ninth for the Mocs.
- Pablo Toranzo picked up his first save for FSC as he recorded the final out of the game.
IN GAME TWO (Mocs 6 - Panthers 3, 7 Innings)
- The Mocs once again scored first as right fielder Connor Berry drove in Brown in the first inning.
- Freshman Tilden Agee drove in the second Mocs runs as he hit a home run to left field in his first collegiate plate appearance.
- Starting pitcher Nate Madej saw his outing cut short due to a 90-minute weather delay as he had to give way to the bullpen in the second inning.
- Following the delay, the Mocs added three more runs in the third, as Nick Wells hit a 3-run homerun. FSC led 5-2 heading into the fourth.
- Logan Verrino entered the game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth and was able to work out of the jam, thanks to a diving catch by Brown in center.
- Thomas Spinelli threw the last two innings for FSC, earning his third save of the season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- With the wins on Saturday, FSC is now 61-11 against FIT and 45-20 in games played in Melbourne.
- Brown blasted two homers on the day, as he continues to lead the SSC in multiple offensive categories. He has scored in 14 of the teams 15 games this year.
- Brown now has 25 career home runs, which ties him with Wade Kirkland (1987-88) for 14th place in program history.
- Cande threw 85 pitches over six innings, 52 of which were strikes. He improved his record to 3-0 this season over his five starts, all of which have come on the road.
- In game one, first baseman Jacob Teter had his hit streak snapped at 11 games as he went 0-2. Over those 11 games, Teter hit .395 with 11 RBI. In his career, Teter now has five different hit streaks of 10 or more games.
- Teter also had a more impressive streak come to an end, as he was not in the starting lineup for game two of the double header, ending his streak of 142 consecutive games started. The senior had started every game for the team since opening day his freshman year. His 142 consecutive starts are the second most in program history.
