DENVER - Florida Southern College outfielder Vaun Brown became the latest Moccasin to hear his name called in the MLB Draft when the San Francisco Giants selected the center fielder with the 14th pick in the 10th round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft. Brown is the 116th Moc to be selected in the MLB Draft and is the 29th to be selected in a top-10 round.
Brown's resume grew tremendously in 2021 as he was named the 2021 Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year. Most recently he was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District® first-team. The 2021 SSC Player of the Year was named to the 2021 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. II All-America Second-Team team. He posted a team leading slash line of .387/.462/.793 while starting in all 26 games played for the Mocs in 2021 and led Southern in numerous categories. He led the team in runs (40), hits (43), home runs (13), RBI (31), total bases (88), and hit by pitches (5). He also led the SSC in runs, hits, home runs, RBI, and total bases. On the base paths, he stole a team-high nine bases on 11 attempts. Brown had his best game on the season in a loss to Rollins as he went 5-for-5 with two home runs, four runs scored, a double and a walk. He ended the season on a six-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 13 of the past 14 games.
In his five year career at Florida Southern, Brown hit .285 with 28 home runs, 28 doubles, 100 RBI, and 140 runs scored. In the outfield, he posted a .984 fielding percentage including a 1.000 fielding percentage in the shortened 2020 season.
Since the inception of the MLB Draft in 1965, Southern has had at least one player selected each year with the exceptions of 1967, 1974, 2004, 2013, and 2020. Brown is the 50th Moccasin to be selected in the top 15 rounds of the MLB Draft.
