Mocs Minutes: Swimming is Back in Action; Basketballs Host Barry Saturday

  • Florida Southern is back at home after only a five points loss to the top team in the SSC #16/18 Tampa. With less than 15 seconds left in the game, Julia Jenike scored to bring the Mocs within three when they ended the game with Tampa making a free throw for the final score of 70-65. Whitney Jacob led the team with 22 points, followed by Julia Jenike with 19 and Mackenzie Steele with 13 points. Defensively, Julia Jenike and Domenica Zamora totalled 11 rebounds together with Jenike collecting six and Zamora with five.
  • On the season, Whitney Jacob leads the team in scoring and is second in the conference with a 17.2 per game average and 258 overall points. Julia Jenike is second in the conference, averaging .435 from beyond the 3-point arc and averaging 14.2 points per game. Sara Wohlgemuth comes fifth for the SSC for assists, averaging 2.3 assists per game
  • In conference play, two players average double-digits in J. Jenike (15.6) and Jacob (15.4) coming in fourth and fifth. In nine conference games, the Mocs offense sits in third in the conference, averaging 67.4 points per game.
  • Barry comes to the Jenkins Field House off of a conference win against Palm Beach Atlantic after falling to Tampa last week; Against the Sailfish Harriet Swindells led the Buccaneers in points with 19 while Ashleigh Pink totaled nine boards.
  • For the Buccneers, For the Bucs, Chiara Fusari is the one to watch in scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game and leads the team with 186 points.
  • In conference play, two players average double digits with Fusari leading Barry with 13.6 points per game followed by . Harriet Swindells with a 11.5 average. The team is through eight conference games, averaging 67.0 points per game.
  • HISTORY Florida Southern holds a 55-19 series lead heading into the 75th meeting between the Mocs and Bucs. The Mocs are 32-4 against Tampa at home. FSC lost their previous meetings last season 55-61.

  • Florida Southern returns home after earning an 87-83 win on the road at Tampa (RV) Wednesday evening. In the win, Dominick Denny welcomed himself back to the boxscore with 17 points in 31 minutes of action on 5-of-11 shooting from the field and 6-for-8 at the free throw line. The freshman guard added five assists and two rebounds to his stat line in the win. Four others scored in double-figures behind Denny in Jack Casale (13), Luke Anderson (13), Wes Bongiorni (10), and Tarik Mckelphin (10). Casale paced the team in rebounding with 10 boards to complete his double-double while Mckelphin was close behind with nine.
  • On the season, Xavier Rhodes leads the team in scoring per game at 14.5 while Tarik Mckelphin is close beind at 14.1. Jack Casale (13.8) and E.J. Dambreville (13.5) round out the double-digit averages on the team. Dambreville is the team leader and averages a double-double with 10.5 boards per game.
  • In conference play, Rhodes edges the group in conference scoring with 15.3 ppg while Mckelphin and Dambreville are tied at 15.1, but the Dorchester, Mass. native, Dambreville, continues to be a force with a double-double average in league play with 10.3 rpg. Casale nearly averages his season average in conference play at 13.6 ppg. The Moccasins average 81.2 points per game as a team, seventh in the legaue, and allow opponents to score 87.7, which is 10th in defensive scoring in the SSC.
  • No. 25 Barry bounced back Wednesday after suffering a loss in overtime to Tampa last Saturday with a 90-85 win at Palm Beach Atlantic. Four players scored in double-digits led by Jake Kakar with a game-high 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting with a 5-for-9 night from beyond the arc. Nick Anderson (17), Michael Schaefer (16), and James Montgomery (10) added in the double-figure realm. The Buccaneers rallied from trailing at half time with 61 second half points to earn the five-point win against the Sailfish.
  • On the season, Nick Anderson is the team leader in points per game with 15.6 while Jake Kakar is right on his heels at 15.1 ppg. Michael Schaefer is third on the team in scoring with 12.9 ppg.
  • In conference play, Kakar is the team leader at 15.9 ppg while Anderson falls in second (15.3) and Schaefer in third at 12.0. The Bucs average 93.1 ppg as a team which leads the league while holding opponents to 88.3 ppg, which is dead last in the SSC.
  • HISTORY This is the second meeting of the 2021-22 season where the Bucs won matchup no. 1 107-93 in Miami Shores, Fla. back on Nov. 20, 2021. Florida Southern overall leads the head-to-head series 55-24 with a 27-7 mark in the Streamline Sale Arena at the George W. Jenkins Field House. In the first meeting this season, the leading scorers from both sides were Jadin Booth (FSC) with 22 points and Michael Schaefer (BU) with 23. For the Mocs, Rhodes scored 19, Dambreville 14, Mckelphin 13, Casale 10, and Babatunde Ajike 11. FSC rallied in the second half but fell just shy of the comeback after a 52-34 halftime lead and outscored the Bucs 59-55 in the second.

  • Florida Southern (M) enter the meet ranked eighth in the nation according to the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division II rankings. Heading into the last stretch of meets before SSC championships, Florida Southern has several athletes looking to qualify for the NCAA postseason. Kyle Micallef broke a school record and set a new SSC record in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 19.59 to send him with an automatic bid to the NCA Championships in March. Freshman Ludovico Viberti has shined in the breaststroke with top scores. Elder Oliveira, Brandon Dyck, and Milosz have each had recent event wins and look to continue with strong standard times.
  • Florida Southern (W) women's team is ranked 20th in the most recent CSCAA rankings. As NCAA selections near an end next month, Sophomore Emily Peck continues to post strong times in the breaststroke for a chance at a bid. Jazzy Hoffmann, named SSC Women's Swimmer of the Week earlier this year, posted a time of 23.64 in the 50 yard freestyle in her last meet to win for consideration of NCAA qualifications. Freshman Olivia Miles has dominated distance events so far this season with several wins and posting 17:32.88 time in the 1650 freestyle, which is sixth all-time in FSC history and one of the best times in the nation.
  • Nova Southeastern & Lynn (M) | Nova Southeastern is tied for 12th in the CSCAA rankings as Lynn is outside the rankings so far this year. The Sharks were led by Olle Williamsson who had event wins in the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke. had The Fighting Knights lost to the Sharks last week, but still had great times by Thomas Labarias and Josh Fountain in the 100 yard backstroke and 1000 yard freestyle, respectively. Lynn also won the 200 yard medley relay in a close race with the Sharks.
  • Nova Southeastern & Lynn (W) | Nova Southeastern women's team are fourth in the nation with an overall win in nearly all of their meets. The Sharks won their last meet against Lynn as Cassandra Wright led with two event wins. Lynn dropped to 22nd in the latest CSCAA polls, just behind Florida Southern. Ewa Osiniak was named SSC Swimmer of the Week after an event win in the 100 and 200 freestyle with times just missing the NCAA B-Standard.
