Mocs Minutes: Men's Soccer Senior Night Wednesday Kicks Off Busy Fall Break

Live Coverage |
  • Opponents: Tampa & Barry
  • Dates | Times: Oct. 19, 2022 | 7:00 PM / Oct. 22, 2022 | 7:00 PM
  • Locations: Tampa, Fla. | Pepin Stadium / Lakeland, Fla. | Berend Field
  • Records: Florida Southern 9-1-3, 5-1-1 SSC | Tampa 6-5-2, 2-2-2 SSC | Barry 7-3-3, 2-2-3 SSC
  • Florida Southern returns to conference play to close out the remaining three games of the regular season after celebrating Senior Night on Saturday in an exhibition match. The Mocs last game was a 2-1 win over Eckerd that set them in the top spot of the conference after Caitlyn Lowery assisted on both goals, including a game-winning corner to Morgan Collica to head for the 2-1 win. Since Florida Southern's last game, the Mocs have moved to second in the conference, behind Nova Southeastern, who has an upper hand in a tie-breaker scenario from the Mocs only loss this season.
  • C. Lowery continues to shine for the Mocs, tied in first in the SSC, with eight goals this season, a career-high for Lowery in a single season. Second on the team in goals, Angelina Coelho has five goals, the most in several years by a freshman, with Lindsey Meyer with four goals, and another four assists. The Mocs have Alison Jenkins, Jasmin Adames, Claire DuRee, and Collica with three goals each, and Malia Brost with two goals. Anita Vera, Haley Thomassy, Maris Kern, and Meghan Kriney each have one goal for 12 different Moccasins with at least one goal this season. The team's 35 goals this season is the most scored by Florida Southern since 2009 when the Mocs scored 41 goals in a single season.
  • In addition to being an offensive powerhouse, the Mocs have a strong defense. Having only allowed nine goals all year, FSC goalies combined for seven shutouts, also a season-best since 2009. Keeper Jenny Staten has four of those shutouts, and six wins this season. Florida Southern is second in the conference with 0.69 goals allowed this season, only behind the undefeated Embry-Riddle Eagles. FSC opponents average 9.8 shots a game, compared to 12.7 by the Mocs. The overall team strengths will prove to make an interesting last three games, as the Mocs look to earn their first regular season title in program history.
  • Tampa hosts the Mocs in a critical SSC road matchup with the Spartans fighting for a conference tournament spot in the few remaining games. Tampa has won two straight games, the first a 2-1 win over Saint Leo as Hannah Kirkpatrick scored both goals, her first two goals of the season. On Saturday, the Spartans won 3-1 against Rollins, as Brooke Steigerwalt and Lone Cirotzki scored their first goals of the season, and Katherine Hostage hit her seventh goal of the year.
  • Hostage leads Tampa with her seven goals, and added two assists this season, with three game-winners so far. Tampa has 11 total goal scorers to make up for its 24 goals. A unique stat to point out for the Spartans is the conference-best 88 corners this year in what appears to be a strong offensive pressure that set up Tampa for goal-scoring opportunities. Florida Southern is tied for second in that category, with 70, but quite the difference between the two teams that FSC will watch for as the game progresses.
  • Barry is another opponent in the middle of the conference standings that is fighting for a conference tournament spot in the later part of the season. Barry has tied its last three opponents, including an impressive 1-1 tie against Nova Southeastern, that put the Mocs in the top SSC spot at the midpoint last week. The Buccaneers will face Eckerd tomorrow night before facing the Mocs, in what will be a critical match in Florida Southern's run toward history.
  • The Bucs are led by McKenna DeLong with six goals this season, with Cristina Blaya right behind with five goals. Although only starting two games, Blaya has 11 points this season, after adding an assist in an impressive use of her 494 minutes up to this point. Both top leaders are two-for-two on penalty kicks, with a perfect four-for-four in the box, drawing many scoring opportunities in the box. Emily Parrott takes a majority of the keeping duties, with 12 starts and 77.8% save percentage, and 35 saves. She has five shutouts this year, only facing 90 shots, although allowing 10 goals. An overall strong defense and goalkeeping will make it tough for FSC to score much-needed points and remain in top conference contention.
  • HISTORY: A tense rivalry against Tampa plays true this year with the conference tournament implications set for this match. Historically, Tampa has the upper hand in the overall record, winning 21-7-2 over Florida Southern. Last year, the Spartans rallied in the final 20 minutes of play to win 3-2 over the Mocs. A similar story is set for the Mocs when facing Barry University, with the Bucs a 17-7-2 overall record against Florida Southern. Last year, the Mocs played to a draw in a 1-1 conference battle. Despite the history of playing these opponents, it is worth noting the Mocs remain undefeated at home, which is on deck against Tampa tomorrow night. When on the road, Florida Southern has 23 goals, and allowed four, however, when at Berend Field, the Mocs have 12 goals, and allowed five goals.
  • Opponents: RV Tampa & #5 Barry
  • Dates | Times: Oct. 19, 2022 | 7:00 PM / Oct. 22, 2022 | 6:00 PM
  • Locations: Lakeland, Fla. | Berend Field / Miami Shores, Fla. | Buccaneer Field
  • Records: Florida Southern 3-4-5, 0-3-3 SSC | RV Tampa 5-4-1, 3-2-1 SSC | #5 Barry 8-1-2, 5-0-2 SSC

Southern is also coming off a huge win from Monday night as they defeated Trinity College 18-0 breaking the record of goals scored in a game. Ten different Moccasins scored in the record-breaking victory as well as two tallying a hat trick. Kyle Carr and Henri Tophoven add to their extensive resume each adding a hat trick as Tophoven receives his second of the year tallying a total of 15 goals on the year.

Several other Mocs made their name known last night as Dylan Lowther, Victor Beker, Santiago Erazo, Felix Tonne, and Jay Skelcher-Maxwell are tacked on a goal for their first of the 2022 season.
  • In conference play the Mocs are 10th, while Tophoven continues to lead the conference in shots on goal (25), goals (15), and points (33). Despite being 10th in the SSC FSC is second in overall stats with 12 games played and a 2.833 scoring average, just behind Eckerd in first with 3.273 average. Southern is in first with assists after Monday night's meeting against Trinity tallying 29 assists, three ahead of Barry.
  • RV Tampa is coming off a 3-1 win over the 20th-ranked Tars of Rollins college over the weekend. Previously to the Spartans win over the ranked Tars, Tampa was previously ranked 11th in the coaches poll, but dropped when they fell to in back-to-back games previously ranked #21 Barry and non-ranked Saint Leo 3-1 against the Buccaneers and 1-0 to the Lions.
  • The the Spartans are led by Juancho Fernandez who has four goals on the season and five assist, while Foster Travis has three goals, followed by four other Tampa Spartans with two goals respectfully in Ornaldo Zeqiri, Omar Thali, Elijah Saint-Marc, and Amgad Salah. In goal, Tampa has seen action from three different keepers but both Adam Forster and Zach Bahr have played a significant amount of minutes as Forster has five starts with 450 minutes tallying 15 saves and Bahr has 360 minutes in four games collecting four saves.
  • In the Sunshine State Conference, Tampa is sitting in sixth with 18 goals for an average of 1.8 goals per game. However the Spartans are 10th in saves only totalling 23 saves in 10 games. Fernandez is leading the entire conference with 47 shots for an average of 5.22 shots per game.
  • No. 5 Barry is ranked fifth after being seventh in the previous United Soccer Coaches poll. The Buccaneers defeated Tampa and Nova Southeastern last week with scores of 3-1 against the Spartans and 3-2 against the Sharks. They will travel up to St. Petersburg on Wednesday to face the Triotins before facing the Mocs on Saturday. In the Bucs last game. Timo Wirth scored his first goal, followed by David Polanco scoring the next two for his fifth and sixth goal of the year.
  • As a team, Barry has 31 goals in 152 attempts while outshooting their opponents 14 to 98 shots. In goal, the Bucs have 29 total saves, while their opponents have 45. The team is led by David Polanco who has six goals on the year, followed by Daniel Schaal and Pascal Sattelberger with four apiece. Seven other Buccaneers have two goals on the season while three have scored a solo goal. In goal, the team has four keepers with Nils Buecheler earning four wins in five games tallying 15 saves.
  • In the conference, Barry is the team to beat as they are sitting in first with no losses in the conference and only one loss on the season. The Bucs only loss was early in the season against Lenoir-Rhyne falling 2-0. Barry is on a three game win streak and are ranked second in assists with four from Daniel Schaal and also second in game-winning goals with two in David Polanco.
  • HISTORY: Against Tampa the Mocs fell 2-1 on the road scoring early. In the past 50 meetings the Mocs are down 11 wins to the Spartans 34 losses with five ties in the past 40 years. FSC is on a two game win streak in the past two meetings and have gone to the Mocs winning in 2019, 2-0 and 3-1 in 2021. In the course of 38 years Southern have nine wins to the Buccaneers 27 wins and two ties for a total of 38 games.

  • The No. 10 Florida Southern women will look to face its second NCAA Division I opponent when facing a top 25 DI team at Florida State. Last time out, the Mocs own their first conference meet, 146-110 against Rollins College, who were registering votes in the latest CSCAA poll. Florida Southern has great leadership with Erin McCann, who is performing great in the last few meets, and will continue to do the same in a tri-meet against FSU and other top opponents, West Florida and North Florida.
  • McCann was joined by Alizee Pelletier and Teagan Michalek, who each had two event wins against Rollins. Other individual winners for Florida Southern were Olivia Miles, Allie Brinton, Rachel Cunningham, Emily Peck, and freshman Elizabeth Sikes, who earned her first individual collegiate win with her time of 58.40 in the 100-yard fly. FSC also won the 200 free relay, as the final event of the meet.
  • The No. 10 Florida Southern men will take on DI FSU men's team on Friday, as the only meet for them this weekend as UNF and UWF only have a women's team. In their home and conference opener, the Mocs beat #25 Rollins College 162-94, where they won 13 of the 14 men's events. The meet win is the first dual meet of the season, building off a fifth-place finish at last year's NCAA Championships and SSC Championship, both of which the Mocs look to repeat and continue their strong NCAA presence.
  • Matteo Zampese led the Mocs with two individual event wins, joining Brandon Wilson and Keith Peristeridis in two individual event wins. K. Peristeridis met NCAA B standard times in both of his events winning in an early showing of continued NCAA qualifications Florida Southern hopes to send. Other winners included Elder Oliveira, Cameron Lai-Harris, and Milosz Mencel. Freshmen Tristan Clanton and Kyle Hopewell each earned their first collegiate individual first-place finishes.

In that meet, FSU won every race and swept 13 of the 17 events. Edith Jernstedt had five event wins that invite, and Gloria Muzito had four wins.
  • The No. 5 West Florida women flex its top CSCAA poll ranking with a big win over Birmingham-Southern last time out, when the Argos won every event in the meet. UWF is undefeated this season and has returners Brooke Simila and Stefanie Markwardt as top performers this season.
  • The North Florida women hosted the Osprey Invite a couple of weeks ago, placing third in a tough competition of swimming. Facing another DI opponent, the Ospreys lost to Vanderbilt last Saturday, before a close win over Georgia Southern in a home meet win. UNF travels to Tallahassee for the quad meet and a great opportunity to face big competition.
