Mocs Minutes: Soccer Doubleheader Featuring the 2022 SSC Regular Season Champions Headlines Tuesday's Events

  • Florida Southern returns home for the final home game of the year on Tuesday as they play host Saint Leo University in a makeup game from earlier this year due to Hurricane Ian. The Mocs are coming off a tough opponent in No.5 Barry as FSC tied the ranked Buccaneers over the weekend with a 1-1 draw as Henri Tophoven scored the only goal for the Moccasins. In goal, Hunter Cole collected two saves playing the entire 90 minutes of action allowing just one goal.
  • In goal, Pearce collected Defensive Player of the Week following a clean sheet against RV Tampa. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida native, totaled seven saves while facing 19 shots from the Spartans. With the play of Pearce, FSC secured a point in the standings with a 0-0 tie.Offensively, Tophoven continues to lead the Mocs with 16 goals on the year and three assists, while Kyle Carr is right behind with five goals and an assist. Both Tophoven and Carr have a hat trick on the year, Tophoven has two. In the assist category for the Mocs several players have three including Tophoven but he is joined by Nick Dittmer, Victor Beker, and Felix Tonne.
  • In conference play the Mocs are sitting 10th, while Tophoven continues to lead the conference in shots on goal (27), goals (16), and points (35). Despite being 10th in the SSC FSC is third in overall stats with 14 games played and a 2.500 scoring average, just behind Eckerd in first with 2.846 average No.5 Barry 2.538 who the Mocs tied over the weekend. Southern sits second in several categories including points (with 35 goals) for a 7.07 average and assists averaging 2.071 per game, saves for 4.14 saves per game, and croners with 72 total averaging a little over five corners per game.
  • Saint Leo is coming off a 3-2 loss over the 10th-ranked Panthers of Florida Tech over the weekend. The Lions scored two off the bench on the loss as Luca Tiozzo and Felipe Ruiz each contributed a goal apiece. Ruiz goal was his second of the year while Tiozzo leads the Lions with his sixth goal.
  • The Lions are led by Tiozzo with six goals for 12 points on the year followed by Noah Kvifte with four, Ander Dulce with three and several other Lions with two goals including Sebastian Inigo, Alexander Mollinedo, Miguel Fernandez, Felipe Ruiz, and Tyler Velazquez. In goal, Saint Leo has Ricardo Ceballos with 47 saves allowing 21 goals in 12 games playing in 1,080 minutes of action.
  • In the Sunshine State Conference, Saint Leo is sitting in sixth with 25 goals for an average of 1.786 goals per game. However the Lions are 4th in saves totalling 50 saves in 14 games.
  • HISTORY: Against Saint Leo the Mocs defeated the Lions last year on Nov. 2 with a 1-0 final scoring in the 48th minute of play on the road. In all FSC has 32 wins over Saint Leo for a 32-26-5 record.

  • Florida Southern hosts Rollins in the regular season finale after a 2-1 victory over Barry Saturday night that clinched them the first SSC Regular Season Championship in program history. The Mocs won their seventh-straight game in Saturday's win, after beating Tampa 2-0 on the road Wednesday night. The win in Tampa was the first time in program history that the Mocs went undefeated on the road in the regular season. Madison Male scored her first goal of the season Wednesday against the Spartans, and Caitlyn Lowery scored her ninth for the 2-0 win. Against the Buccaneers, Malia Brost was the first goal scorer, after Barry took a 1-0 lead in the first half. Brost found C. Lowery for the game-winner and Florida Southern's first regular season title.
  • C. Lowery earned her first SSC Offensive Player of the Week from her efforts last week. She leads the conference in goals (10) and points (25), and top 40 among NCAA Division II in several categories including ninth in the nation for game-winners (five). C. Lowery's reaching 10 goals is the first time since 2010 that a Moccasin has scored 10 or more goals in a single season. Keeper Jenny Staten shutout the Spartans Wednesday, her fifth shutout of the year, and had seven saves in the win against the Bucs. The week earned Staten her second SSC Defensive Player of the Week award, the first time a defensive player has repeated the award in a single season.
  • As a team, the Mocs continue to shine on both offense and defense. The record-breaking season has produced the best record for head coach Paul Lawrence and the most wins since the 2009 season. The 39 team goals is fourth-best in school history so far and the Mocs have tied the most conference wins in a single season in program history. The regular season title guarantees the Mocs a first-round bye in the SSC tournament, with the first match for Florida Southern set for Thursday, Nov. 3 in the semifinal round. As for regional championship contention, the Mocs were named as one of eight teams "under consideration" for the six spots that go to the NCAA South Regional Championship rounds.
  • Rollins travels to Lakeland for the regular season finale for the Mocs, but the Tars will return to Winter Park and face Barry on Friday in a rescheduled match. A close 3-2 loss to PBA came after a 2-2 tie against No. 3 Embry-Riddle. Against the Eagles, the Tars took an early 2-0 lead in the second half, but Embry-Riddle fired back with two goals in under one minute in the second half for the tie.
  • The Tars are led by Anna Todd, with four goals on the season, including a goal in each of the last three games. Meghan Mosley has three goals and three assists to lead the team in points on the year. With 17 goals as a team, Rollins has 8 different goal scorers. In goal, the Tars use two keepers, both with similar times and games appeared. Combined, they have 46 saves, with Elena Beasley with four shutouts. Michelle Fickett has 26 saves total, facing a majority of the 127 shots by opponents.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern has its work cut out when playing Rollins College, having lost the 18 games against the Tars. With only two wins against Rollins in the 33-game history, Florida Southern is looking for the second home win against Rollins in series history.

  • Florida Southern is riding a four-match win streak heading into Tuesday night's match with the defending National Champions and 8th-ranked University of Tampa Spartans. The four-match streak ties the longest win streak of the season for the Mocs who are looking for their third win over a nationally-ranked opponent this season.
  • Junior Mackenzie Petermann continues to lead the Mocs offensively with 3.35 kills per set which ranks her fourth in the SSC. Senior Ali Travis (2.58) and graduate student Emma Shaddix (2.03) are the only other Mocs averaging over 2.00 kills per set this season. Senior Mika Garza held down the setter position in the Mocs' 3-0 victory over Florida Tech. She is averaging 8.88 assists per set. She currently ranks seventh in the SSC in assists per set. Travis leads a potent serving attack with 32 service aces while Garza (27) and graduate student Beatrice Formilan (21) each have 20-plus. The Mocs as a team rank second in the SSC in service aces per set at 1.79 only trailing Eckerd (1.92).
  • Formilan leads the backline for the Mocs and is averaging 4.66 digs per set this season to rank third in the SSC. At the net, it's sophomore Madison Fowler leading the way with 66 total blocks. She is averaging 0.92 per set so far in 2022. Joining her in the top five are Shaddix (47), senior Jana Gilic (45), Travis (26) and Petermann (25).
  • No. 8 Tampa has won five-straight matches heading into Tuesday night's affair and the Spartans have yet to lose at home this season. The only two losses for the Spartans came at Eckerd (3-2) and at Nova Southeastern (3-2).
  • Sophomore Kalli Cors leads the Spartans offensively with 2.92 kills per set while three others are averaging over 2.00 kills per set this season including freshman Nathaly Perez (2.70), freshman Tess Schrenger (2.40) and junior Mackenzie Dufresne (2.16). Sophomores Zoey Seput and Emily Noe split time at the setter position with Seput averaging 5.72 assists per set and Noe coming in at 5.07 per set. Cors leads at the service line with 35 aces, 17 more than her next nearest teammate.
  • Defensively, senior Claudia Rivera leads the team with 5.39 digs per set. At the net, it is Dufresne leading the charge with 74 total blocks, an average of 1.01 per set. Four others have 30-plus blocks on the season including senior Tatyana Lyons (56), Perez (40), sophomore Hayley Dillon (33) and Schrenger (31).
  • HISTORY: The Mocs and Spartans have met an overwhelming 134 times on the volleyball court with the Spartans holding a 76-58 lead in the series. The Mocs are 13-38 all-time on the road versus the Spartans. UT has won six-straight in the series and the last FSC victory in Tampa came on Oct. 31, 2017 as the Mocs swept the Spartans 3-0 on Halloween. The last win prior to 2017 in Tampa occurred all the way back in 1994. UT has won 32 of the last 34 meetings in Tampa with the Mocs.
