Mocs Minutes: Two Teams in Action on the Road

  • Florida Southern will hit the road Friday for their final Sunshine State Conference regular-season game as they travel to Winter Garden, Fla. to face Rollins. The Mocs are coming off their first SSC win as they defeated Saint Leo 3-0 collecting its first shutout win with AJ Pearce in net saving the penalty kick from Miguel Fernandez. Pearce tallied just one save as Southern's defense made up of Santiago Erazo, Wade Bohde, and Nyles Lockridge held the Lions scoreless. Offensively the Mocs had three individual goals scoring in the 41st minute with a goal by Felix Tonne who was assisted by Braden Hill. Hill in the second half found the back of the net on his own with a shot right in the back of the net. Santiago Erazo sealed the fate for the Lions with a header from Lucas Galvis to capture their first win in conference play.
  • In goal, Pearce collected Defensive Player of the Week following a clean sheet against RV Tampa. On the season, the Mocs have 38 goals compared to their opponents 18, averaging 2.53 goals per game. In net Pearce has 59 total saves to lead FSC. Henri Tophoven is leading Southern with 16 goals and three assists followed by Kyle Carr with five goals and an assist. With Erazo goal on Tuesday, he now has three goals on the year and one assist followed by Nick Dittmer, Tonne, and Huggins each with two goals apiece.
  • In conference play the Mocs moved up from 10th to ninth, while Tophoven continues to lead the conference in shots on goal (27), goals (16), and points (35). Despite being ninth in the SSC FSC moved to second in overall stats with 15 games played and a 2.533 scoring average, just behind Eckerd in first with 2.643 average. As a team, Southern is sitting in first with assists totalling 31 assists for an average of 2.067 assist per goal. In the Miscellaneous category FSC is first with 81 corners.
  • Rollins is on a two game winning streak as they sit fourth in the SSC. They defeated the Eagles of Embry-Riddle last weekend with a 2-0 shutout, before upsetting the No. 5 ranked Barry Bucs with a 4-2 decision on Tuesday evening. The Tars just recently have moved into the United Soccer Coaches rankings placing 24th to close out the regular-season before facing the Mocs in the final regular game.
  • No. 24 Rollins led the entire game against No. 5 Barry scoring the team's four goals before the Bucs could ever get on the board. Kaden Foreman scored his first goal of the season early in the 11th minute followed by Patrick Horan, Cole Cecconi, and Nazar Tsaruk scoring in 10-minute increments before the first half was over. In net, the Tars were led by Maximilli Obermeier playing the entire 90 minutes of action collecting three saves
  • Rollins led the entire game against No. 5 Barry scoring the team's four goals before the Bucs could ever get on the board.   • HISTORY: In the last two meetings between the Mocs and Tar both have ended in a 2-2 draw, with last year's meeting being a double overtime tie. In the last meeting current player Daniel Miranda scored the final goal for the Mocs with an assist from Leoluca Diefenbach.

  • Florida Southern has won four of its last five matches with the lone setback during the stretch being a 3-0 loss to No. 6 Tampa. FSC was among the 10 teams under consideration for the eight NCAA South Region Championship slots the organization announced yesterday (Oct. 26). The true rankings will be released in the weeks leading up to the selection show.
  • Junior Mackenzie Petermann continues to lead the Mocs offensively with 3.33 kills per set which ranks her fourth in the SSC. Senior Ali Travis (2.60) and graduate student Emma Shaddix (2.01) are the only other Mocs averaging over 2.00 kills per set this season. Senior Mika Garza has retaken her role as the lone setter for the Mocs and is averaging 8.87 assists per set. She currently ranks seventh in the SSC in assists per set. Travis leads a potent serving attack with 34 service aces while Garza (27) and graduate student Beatrice Formilan (21) each have 20-plus. The Mocs as a team rank second in the SSC in service aces per set at 1.78 only trailing Eckerd (1.92).
  • Formilan leads the backline for the Mocs and is averaging 4.79 digs per set this season to rank third in the SSC. At the net, it's sophomore Madison Fowler leading the way with 67 total blocks. She is averaging 0.89 per set so far in 2022. Joining her in the top five are Shaddix (48), senior Jana Gilic (46), Travis (26) and Petermann (25).
  • Lynn has dropped two of its last three contests including a 3-1 setback at Eckerd and a 3-2 heartbreaking loss to then No. 8 Tampa on the road. The Fighting Knights picked up a big win Tuesday night at home as Lynn defeated No. 16 Barry 3-0.
  • Seniors Paige Barash and Nadia Lindner are each averaging over 3.00 kills per set to lead the offensive effort. Barash comes in at 3.68 kills per set while Lindner has 3.30. Senior Emily Edwards has been dishing out the ball from the setter position and is averaging a team-best 10.68 assists per set. Three Fighting Knights have 20-plus service aces this season led by graduate student Marin Black with 33 and Barash with 31.
  • Defensively, Black leads the way with 4.32 digs per set in the back while graduate student Monica Mazzoleni leads the front with 71 total blocks. Her next highest teammate Edwards has 46.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs and Fighting Knights have met 49 times on the volleyball court with Florida Southern owning a 33-16 record over that span. The Fighting Knights have had the edge in the most recent match-ups, winning seven of the last 10 meetings including the past five meetings. The most recent victory for Florida Southern in the series came back on Oct. 13, 2018 at home as FSC won 3-1. The last win for FSC in Boca Raton came on Oct. 28, 2017, five years to the day of this week's match-up.
  • Nova Southeastern has dropped five of its last six contests most recently snapping a five-match losing streak with a 3-1 victory over Palm Beach Atlantic at home. The Sharks are 8-2 at home this season with the only two losses coming early against American International and a 3-0 defeat by Barry just two weeks ago on Oct. 18.
  • Freshman Taylor Stockman and sophomore Kate Mihacevich lead the offensive attack for the Sharks. Stockman is averaging 2.85 kills per set while Mihacevich is averaging 2.89 per set. Junior Elizabeth Price leads the team with an average of 3.24 kills per set but has not seen any action since. Oct. 4. Seniors Madison Cook (9.45 a/s) and Bruna Avila (7.02 a/s) have been running the Sharks' offense. Junior Preslee Brooksbank (28) and sophomore Jordan Chessar (20) are the only two Sharks with 20 or more service aces.
  • Defensively, Brooksbank leads the backline averaging 3.43 digs per set. At the net, Chessar has a team-best 64 blocks. Both freshman Olivia Aniol (50) and Stockman (45) have 40-plus blocks on the season.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs and Sharks have met 40 times on the volleyball court with Florida Southern owning a 32-8 record over that span. The Mocs have won seven of the most recent 10 matches but all three of those losses have come in the five most recent meetings. NSU and FSC split the series last season with each team winning on its home court while NSU swept the series in 2019. FSC took the opening match this season upsetting the then-No. 25 Nova Southeastern Sharks 3-1 in Lakeland.
