  • Florida Southern returns to play after games were postponed last week due to Hurricane Ian. The Mocs, ranked eighth in the latest United Soccer Coaches South Region poll, continue their best start to a season since the 2017 year. With five wins already this season, Florida Southern won their last matchup, a 1-0 conference win over Florida Tech, as well as a tie against No. 2 Embry-Riddle. Angelina Coelho was the goal scorer in the Florida Tech game with a clutch penalty kick goal. Keeper Jenny Staten had seven saves in the shutout win that gave her an SSC Defensive Player of the Week award.
  • The eighth-best team in the South Region honor plays strongly in part due to the strong offensive goal scoring by the Mocs. Caitlyn Lowery leads the team with five goals and three assists on the year. Coelho has three goals on the year, with six other Moccasins with two goals, and another two scorers with one goal. Florida Southern is first in the conference in goal scoring, averaging 2.444 goals a game, compared to 0.67 goals for their opponents. In just nine games played, the Mocs have 22 goals on the year. C. Lowery is top four in the SSC in goals scored and points.
  • Paired with a great offensive scheme, the Mocs have a strong backline, allowing only 0.67 goals a game for their opponents. Staten, the SSC Defensive Player of the Week to end the September run, has 20 saves on the year. The senior earned her third shutout of the season against Florida Tech, 13th of her career, to put her alone in second in the FSC record books for career shutouts. A veteran backline stops many of the shot attempts, with the Moccasins only having 113 shots faced by their opponents. An overall great team by the Mocs lead to the best record in several years at the midpoint of the season.
  • Saint Leo host the Mocs Tuesday night after the Saturday matchup was postponed due to Hurricane Ian. The Lions lost their last game, a 2-0 loss to Barry, but won 1-0 against No. 24 Rollins College a couple of weeks ago. Saint Leo is led by Alex Collighan, with three goals on the season and two assists. Collighan had the game-winner against the Tars, with Nina Mueller second on the team with two goals. The Lions have 34 saves on the year courtesy of keeper Maitane Bravo, with three shutouts on the year. An even five wins on the year mark a big game for both teams in SSC standings and future national recognition.
  • Edward Waters will face the Mocs after tying their last opponent, Florida National University, a couple of weeks ago. With two canceled games, the Tigers last opponent before Florida National was the matchup in Jacksonville against the Mocs. Florida Southern won 8-1 in that game, with a penalty kick goal by the Tigers their sole score. Edward Waters is led in goals by Ara Achalucas and Claudia Mate, with two goals each. Despite few goals scored on the year and a tough record, the Tigers have drawn three penalty kicks on the year, scoring on two of the attempts. With seven games played this season, the Tigers scored five goals and added 52 shots on the year. Goalkeeper Sheila Pascual takes on most of the shots in goal, with 49 saves on the year, allowing 30 goals. Pascual has faced 116 shots and holds a 0.583 save percentage.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern travels to Saint Leo, with 11 wins in its history, and 13 losses in recent years. The last time these two teams met was Senior Night last year, where a double overtime own goal by the Lions led to a 2-1 Moccasin victory in the final seconds. FSC won their game earlier in the season against Edward Waters with a program record of eight goals scored in their matchup. Despite a quick turnaround with back-to-back games in two days, Florida Southern roster depth will be tested in the games.
  • Opponent: Embry-Riddle
  • Date | Time: Oct. 5, 2022 | 4:00 PM
  • Location: Lakeland, Fla. | Berend Field
  • Records: Florida Southern 2-3-3, 0-2-1 SSC | Embry-Riddle 2-5-2, 0-3-1 SSC
  • Florida Southern is coming back after an extremely long week without any action due to Hurricane Ian. The Mocs are set and ready after coming off a huge tie against #6 Florida Tech where Southern earned their third draw of the season, this one being the toughest to date.
  • Graduate Transfer, Henri Tophoven is continuing to lead the Mocs as he scored the two goals against the #6 Panthers, scoring in the 18th minute and 87th minute giving the Mocs a 2-2 draw. These two goals boast Tophoven to be the leading scorer for the Mocassins and the Sunshine State Conference just one goal short of double-digit scoring in just eight games. Helping Tophoven with the final goal of the FIT game was sophomores Felix Aakerberg and Victor Beker who each got credited for assisting the final goal against Florida Tech.
  • The Mocs are currently sitting eighth in the SSC just above the Mocs upcoming opponent Embry-Riddle and Saint Leo which both were scheduled for last week, but now postponed to later this season. Against SSC opponents the Mocs are sitting second with saves holding just behind Embry-Riddle 22 saves with the Mocs 15 behind Goalkeeper AJ Pearce. FSC currently first with points in the conference averaging three points a game.
  • Embry-Riddle is coming off a 5-1 loss to RV Nova Southeastern who the Mocs fell to earlier in the season 2-1 during the conference opener. The Eagles have been able to compete over the weekend so they have a little more practice compared to the Mocs who have been able to rest an extra couple of days. Before the Hurricane Embry-Riddle tied Eckerd with a 2-2 draw.
  • The lone goal for the Eagles was scored by Noah Sims who scored in the 28th minute with an assist by Kosoric Konstantin for Sims first goal of the season. Embry-Riddle has just nine goals on the year while their opponents have scored 24. Individually, sophomore Eden Bokobza is leading the Eagles with two goals and an assist followed by sophomore Sandro Henning with two goals. Several Eagles have a solo goal on the year in Louis Walker, Noah Sims, Tom Shepherd, Konstantin Kosoric, and Jano Baxmann; while Anthony Vlez is the only Eagle to tab on two assists.
  • In goal, sophomore Thomas Loesel is the only goalkeeper to see action this season, appearing in all nine games for a total of 810 minutes of action for 48 saves. With Loesel in goal, he is leading the Sunshine State Conference with saves just seven saves ahead of the Mocs keeper for 22 saves in four games played to the Mocs three. Neither goalie has a shutout. Embry-Riddle currently sits at the bottom of the SSC overall and 10th in SSC games only just above Lynn.
  • HISTORY: This is just the 27th meeting between the two teams as the Mocs have won 17 of 26 meetings thus far. The last meeting was Oct 27 where FSC came away with a 2-0 win at Embry-Riddle.
