LAKELAND, Fla. – Running on its home course, the Florida Southern women's cross country team took ninth overall Saturday morning at the 2022 NCAA South Region Championship. The Mocs suffered a few injuries late this week which caused the team to have just six competitors compared to the rest of the field which all had seven runners in the race. Junior
Ellie Fluman and sophomore
Emma Mussante led the way for the Mocs as they took 23
rd and 24
th, respectively, to earn All-Region recognition.
Fluman posted the ninth best 6K region championship performance in program history as she crossed the line in 22:21.7 while Mussante posted the 10
th best time in program history at 22:24.0. Junior
Jinia Johnson was next to finish for the Mocs as she took 47
th overall while stopping the clock at 23:17.3. Running alongside Johnson most of the race was sophomore
Mya Stam who finished seven seconds back at 23:24.2 while placing seven spots back in 54
th.
The final grouping of Mocs was sophomore
Julia Svartstrom and freshman
Caitlin Beery who was making her NCAA Region Championship debut. Svartstrom crossed the line in 25:11.7 to earn 95
th while Beery clocked in at 25:15.4 which was good for 97
th.
Lee out of Tennessee took home the team championship with 48 total points. The rest of the top-five consisted of Sunshine State Conference Champion Palm Beach Atlantic (84 pts.), Tampa (89 pts.), Saint Leo (140 pts.) and Mississippi College (145 pts.). The Mocs, who tallied 241 points, finished just behind Embry-Riddle (230 pts.) and just ahead of West Florida (325 pts.).
