MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - A huge fourth quarter from
Marissa Jenike propelled Florida Southern College women's basketball to a 69-57 win at Barry University on Saturday afternoon. The Bucs made the Mocs fight for it throughout the first three quarters but in the final quarter, Florida Southern pulled away to secure the victory.Â
Â
After Saturday's win, the Mocs are 5-2 on the season and 2-1 in Sunshine State Conference play.Â
Â
Four Mocs notched double-digits led by
Domenica Zamora with 18, where she added five assists. Jenike added 17 points, 11 of which came in the final quarter of play.
Arielle Dabu shot an incredible 3-of-6 from the three-point line which helped her add 13 points to the Mocs total. Additionally, despite Barry's best efforts to
Ashley Shell's offensive abilities, she still managed to produce a double-double for the Mocs with 10Â points and 10 rebounds.
Â
In the first several minutes of the opening quarter, the Mocs clamped the Bucs defensively leading to a 12-4 advantage with under two minutes remaining in the quarter. However, in the final moments of the quarter, the Bucs gained significant momentum after capitalizing on a puzzling amount of traveling violations from the Mocs to make the score 12-10 at the end of the frame.Â
Â
Throughout the second quarter, the two teams played a lot of back-and-forth basketball as the lead changed six times. The Bucs managed to stay in the game throughout the second quarter due to some costly turnovers from the Mocs as Florida Southern trailed 26-25 going into the locker room.
Â
Dabu drained a three at the beginning of the third to take a 28-26 lead and shift the momentum back in favor of the Mocs. The shot marked the beginning of a 14-5 Florida Southern run. Despite the Mocs' big run, Barry was once again able to rally and bring it within three going into the fourth quarter, 44-41 FSC.Â
Â
Jenike had a hot start in the fourth quarter with a deep three and two layups in the first few plays of the quarter. Dabu added another three to extend the lead to nine. Shell proceeded to make two big shots in the paint and Jenike drained another three to give the Mocs a 61-45 lead and take the game away from Barry.Â
