Mocs Minutes: Mocs on the Move for Mid-Week Action

Men's and Women's Basketball, Women's Tennis, and Men's Lacrosse all travel in mid-week action

  • Florida Southern The men head to St. Augustine to take on Flagler after a postponed match last week against Lynn University. The Mocs enter the match 0-1 on the season after a loss to No. 1 Barry to start the spring season. Despite the loss, Valentin Hertweck took the No. 3 player in the nation, Alejandro Gallego, to a tie-breaker that Gallego ultimately won. Florida Southern returned 10 total student-athletes from last year's squad, including nine seniors, whom they will continue to rely on in these difficult matches. Head coach Greg Van Emburgh cites a deep roster as a point for success in the coming season and will look for the each athlete to contribute. The last time both teams met was in March 2020, when the unranked Mocs opened their 2020 season in a stunning 5-2 win over No. 7 Flagler. The win was the second-highest ranked victory by the Mocs in school history.
  • Flagler, a member of the Peach Belt Conference, enters with a sweeping win over Auburn Montgomery a few days ago. The Saints are led by Nikita Tatyanin, who is the 31st best singles player in the nation. Head coach Jonas Piibor is in his first season with Flagler after spending time with Gonzaga. The Saints split their first two doubles matches against AUM, with their winning doubles point coming from their last pairing. The coveted doubles point will be a battle for both teams to set the momentum for the rest of the match.

  • Florida Southern is riding a seven-game win streak and the Mocs have now beaten every team in the conference besides one: Saint Leo. In their last meeting, the Lions won by four, as Florida Southern was unable to fully recover from a 10-point halftime deficit. It was an uncharacteristic outing for Florida Southern's defense, as they allowed the Lions to shoot .563 from the field, and were out-rebounded by 13. Offensively, the team was led by Julia Jenike, who scored 16 points through 38 minutes of play. Saint Leo's Kiki Mcintyre had 19 points, Amanda Ulrich hhad 17, and Alex Button came away with nine rebounds to lead the team.
  • On the season, after committing just four turnovers last week against Tampa, the Mocs have boosted their assist-turnover ratio to 1.13, which is best in the conference and 19th in the country. Sara Wohlgemuth, playing point guard, is second in the conference with an indivudal ratio of 1.54.
  • In conference play,the Moccasins also lead the conference in turnover margin, at 5.22, which is 23rd in the country. They average just 13.4 per game, and force 18.65.
  • Saint Leo is coming off of a surprising upset to Rollins College, as the Lions watched their three-game win streak snap at the hands of the 3-win Tars. The Mocs have continued to play well, winning seven straight, including a 25-point win over the nationally-ranked Tampa Spartans. Since these teams last played, the Mocs are 8-1.
  • On the season, the conference's two leading scorers will square off, as Amanda Ulrich and Whitney Jacob are 1st and 2nd in the SSC in points per game. In her third year with Saint Leo, Ulrich is averaging 18.9 points per game. Jacob, a transfer student out of Regis University, is averaging 16.8
  • In conference both teams have clinched a spot in the SSC post-season tournament, and if the season ended today, both teams would host on March 1st, with the Mocs ranked second in the conference, the Lions ranked fourth.
  • HISTORY This will be the 95th meeting between the two teams. Florida Southern leads the win ratio with 83 wins. However, the Mocs fell to Saint Leo in their last meeting with a 66-70 decision at home.

  • Florida Southern travels to Saint Leo Wednesday to close out regular season road trips. The Moccasins look to bounce back to the win column after suffering a 96-76 setback to no. 1 Nova Southeastern on Feb. 12 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. E.J. Dambreville and Jack Casale both led the team with 23 points while Wes Bongiorni added 11 points off the bench for the Mocs. Dambreville led the team with nine rebounds on the night.
  • On the season, the Mocs average 80.5 points per game behind Dambreville's team-leading 14.9 points per game with 342 on the season. The Dorchester, Mass. native currently sits at 952 points in his career. Joining Dambreville in double-digit averages are Xavier Rhodes and Jack Casale with 13.6 and 13.0, respectively.
  • In conference play, Florida Southern sits in sixth in the league standings averages 80.7 points a game while Dambreville also leads the team through 17 SSC games with 16.4 ppg having played in 16 of the 17 conference contests. Rhodes and Casale join in double-figure averages at 13.6 and 12.6, respectively.
  • Saint Leo hosts Florida Southern after dropping the last two contests to no. 1 Nova Southeastern, 91-74, and at Rollins, 87-84. In the recent matchup with the Tars, Wade Coomer led the Lions with 27 points while Cantia Rahming added 23, the lone double-digit scorers in the game for Saint Leo. Rahming added 11 boards to complete his double-double.
  • On the season, Saint Leo averages 81.8 points overall and is led by Wade Coomer with 14.2 points a game, just ahead of Francis Sio at 13.4, Jared Coomer at 12.4, and Frank Webb Jr. at 11.8.
  • In conference play, the Lions currently sit in eighth place in the league standings and average 79.8 points a game through 14 true league contests. Wade Coomer and Franics Sio continue to lead the Lions in scoring at 16.7 and 15.7 points a game, respectively.
  • HISTORY Florida Southern remains ahead in the all-time series matchups with a 93-24 record despite the Lions taking game one earlier this season in overtime, 99-90. E.J. Dambreville (FSC) and Wade Coomer (SLU) were the two leading scorers in the game with 24 and 27 points, respectively. Trailing by five at the halftime break, Florida Southern rallied to outscore Saint Leo 43-38 in the second half to force overtime. The Mocs charged late and held a slight lead but it was the Lions who tied things up with free throws with seven-seconds left to send the game into overtime, where SLU earned the win with a 15-6 score in overtime.

  • Florida Southern men's lacrosse dropped a tough non-conference match-up with third-ranked Tampa on Saturday. The Mocs outshot the Spartans 59-39 and controlled most of the possession. The Spartans used timely goals and incredible goalkeeping to take the 16-5 victory.
  • Senior Kevin Horwitz was named the Sunshine State Conference Specialist of the Week for the second-straight week for his performance at the faceoff X. He won 17 of 24 faceoffs against the Spartans holding Tampa to just seven victories all game. He now leads the SSC in groundballs per game (12.33) and faceoff win percentage (.792).
  • Junior Jeff Atlas continues to lead the Mocs in scoring with 16 total points off of six goals and 10 assists. The 3.33 assists per contest is tops in the SSC this season as well. Juniors Jay Minor and Sean Nolan share the team lead in goals scored with eight each. They also each have an assist. Minor scored a team-best two goals in the loss to Tampa.
  • Both Florida Southern and Belmont Abbey dropped out of the top-20 USILA NCAA Division II rankings this week with both programs receiving votes in the most recent poll. FSC had been ranked 20th overall prior to the loss to Tampa while Belmont Abbey had been ranked 17th in the poll prior to its overtime loss to Florida Tech.
  • Belmont Abbey opened the year ranked among the top-20 in the USILA NCAA Division II Poll but back-to-back losses to nationally-ranked Limestone and Florida Tech dropped the Crusaders to the others receiving votes category. The Crusaders were 10-4 a season ago including winning the Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship over top-seed Mount Olive.
  • Senior Bailey Williams leads the Crusaders in points with seven while tying for the team lead in assists with four. Junior Noah Haas leads the team in goals with six while junior Austin Hasen has four. Senior Luke Spanier shares the assists team lead with Williams as they each have four helpers. Sophomore Caleb Mulcahy mains the X and will battle Kevin Horwitz for the faceoff victory. Mulcahy has won 32 of his 54 faceoffs for a .593 win percentage.
  • HISTORY Belmont Abbey holds a 5-2 advantage in the series history including winning the most recent four contests dating back to 2015. The last Florida Southern victory in the series came in Lakeland on March, 13, 2014, a 15-9 Moccasins win. FSC owns one victory at Belmont Abbey, a 13-9 win in 2012, the first meeting between the two programs. A Mocs win would mark the first time in Belmont Abbey program history in which the Crusaders have opened a season 0-3.
