ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Florida Southern Softball got ahead early, scoring two runs in the first inning, and never looked back, as they beat Georgia Southwestern State University, 6-1 on Friday night.
In the first game of a busy weekend at Flagler Field, the Mocs rattled off 13 hits to pick up their first win of the season.Â
Mel Rogers was remarkable for Florida Southern on the mound, pitching a complete game, allowing just one run on three hits. Destiny Colgate led the Mocs offense, recording two RBIs, one of which came off a home run.Â
How it Happened
Rogers got her season off to a red-hot start, striking out the side to begin the game. Myah Moy provided the first offense of the season, singling after Kelsey Peck walked. Colgate immediately contributed offensively, doubling in her first at-bat to bring Kiki Morris, who reached on a fielder's choice, home. Victoria Rodriguez wound up singling to send Colgate home, putting the Mocs up 2-0 at the end of the first.Â
After a scoreless second inning, Rogers pitched a 1-2-3 at the top of the third, with Colgate proceeding to hit a solo home run to bring her team ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Rodriguez scored after doubling, when Skyler Ralstin singled into right field.Â
Rogers allowed a solo home run in the top of the fourth, but Colgate doubled in the bottom of the fifth for her third hit of the afternoon. She would come across to score on a Maddi Conner single, extending the Moccasin lead to 5-1.Â
Peck added some insurance in the sixth inning, scoring on a Morris groundout after doubling earlier on, extending the lead to five runs.
Rogers closed out the game with another dominant inning, not allowing another runner to reach to secure a win for Florida Southern in their first bout of the year.
