LAKELAND, Fla. - Florida Southern women's basketball extended their win streak to five games in a dominant 77-49 victory over Lynn on Saturday evening. Southern jumped out to the early lead in the first quarter and ran away with the game for a dominant 28-point victory.
The win was a group effort for the Mocs as there were four scoring in double-digits.
Ashley Shell led the way as she posted a season-high 14 points, recorded a game-high five rebounds, and forced three turnovers off the bench.
Mackenzie Steele recorded a game-high for the Mocs with 15 points and dished out four assists. The other two double-digit scorers were
Julia Jenike, with 13, and
Whitney Jacob, with 12.
With this win, the Mocs are now 13-8 overall and 11-4 in Sunshine State Conference play. Additionally, they now have the longest active win streak in the conference.
"We're trying to finish the second half of the season undefeated," stated head coach
Betsy Harris after the win. "It's going to be so tough and I think we've got the toughest part of the schedule going forward… but they seem very focused in practice. Everyone is in good spirits."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Jacob backed down a Lynn defender to put the first points of the game on the board. The Fighting Knights answered with a nice bucket of their own.
Sara Wohlgemuth struck back, draining a three and gaining the lead for the Mocs that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. They went on a 24-5 run behind a seven-point quarter from Steele and a buzzer-beater three from
Domenica Zamora. FSC had a huge 26-7 lead at the end of the first.
Florida Southern only built upon their momentum from there and continued to pour it on throughout the second quarter. Jacob and
Arielle Dabu each hit a three and Shell scored a buzzer-beater inside the paint to end the quarter with a 38-18 lead.
By the end of the third, the Mocs had a 61-33 lead, behind threes from Steele, Jenike, and
Madlena Gerke.
The Fighting Knights matched the Mocs in the fourth quarter with 16-points scored from each team, but it was not enough to undo the damage that had been done. Southern defeated Lynn by a score of 77-49.
