PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Florida Southern College baseball team were unable to find a rhythm as they lose 6-1 to No. 10 West Florida Sunday afternoon. The Argos took the series 2-1 as the Mocs spring 2022 series opener.
Florida Southern (1-2) tied the game in the second inning off a solo home run by
Duncan Hunter, but unable to score after as West Florida (2-1) scored four runs in the fourth inning and held on for a commanding 6-1 victory.
Despite the loss, the Mocs had their third consecutive game with at least one home run. Graduate transfer
Jared DeSantolo continued a great start as Moccasin with a hit in the third inning and three-game hitting streak to start the season. The winning pitcher for the Argos was Tyler Dowdy, as
Jake Curry was handed the loss.
The Argos took a 1-0 lead in the first after a walk put Trent Jeffcoat on base and consecutive hits by West Florida brought him home. The Mocs answered in the second with a solo home run by Hunter, the third consecutive game with a home run by the Mocs, but that would be the only score of the day by Florida Southern. DeSantolo managed a single in the third but picked off by fielder's choice shortly after.
Tied 1-1 at the midpoint in the fourth inning, West Florida added four runs on four hits before Curry was able to earn his third strikeout of the day and leave one Argonaut on base. An unearned run in the fifth brought the West Florida lead to five (6-1) to end the fifth, as the Mocs struggled to get on base.
Ahmad Fitts doubled to left center in the eighth, but was left on base with putouts to seal the West Florida win.
The Mocs were outhit six-to-one by the Argos as
Logan Verrino,
David Butz, and
Collin Camarigg each had time on the mound. Josh Prozina and Chris Johnson led West Florida with two RBIs each and series win over Florida Southern.
