Men's Tennis Drop Season Opener to No. 1 Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Florida Southern College men's tennis team lost their spring season opener against No. 1 Barry University Sunday afternoon at the Buccaneer Tennis Center.
 
The Mocs started their 2022 spring season against the defending Division II National Champions and several ranked singles opponents, but continued to fight in an attempt to gain points. Barry won the match 7-0, winning the three flights for doubles and all of the six single matches.
 
Senior Valentin Hertweck had a three-set battle against No. 3 Alejandro Gallego. Hertweck won his first set 6-2, before a close 6-4 loss in the second set. A match-deciding third set was back and forth as Hertweck had a slight lead toward the end as Gallego pulled ahead 6-5. Hertweck won the next score, but was unable to finish the near upset as the third set went to Gallego 7-6 (7-5). The Mocs were unable to get a set win in the other five matches, but fought hard in each set.
 
In doubles, a pairing of Erik Nordblom and Matteo Feggi gave the Bucs a tough battle, but lost 6-3 to pairing of No. 13 Giuliato and Forcano. Hertweck and Brian Pham teamed up for another 6-3 loss to Buttner and Gutierrez.
