LAKELAND, Fla. — Florida Southern College women's basketball's
Sara Wohlgemuth picked a good time to find her scoring touch.
The redshirt-freshman scored nine of her 12 points in the fourth quarter, including a go-ahead jumper with 3:20 left to help give No. 2 seed Florida Southern a 65-57 win over No. 7 Lynn in the opening round of the Sunshine State Conference Women's Championship on Tuesday night at Jenkins Field House.
The win was the 11th in a row for Florida Southern as it advances them to the SSC semifinals against No. 3 Eckerd as the Tritons defeated Nova Southeastern 81-66.
In the two previous contests this season between Florida Southern and Lynn, the home team won by more than 30 points. That wasn't the case this time as Lynn fought the Mocs every step of the way.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lynn took a 28-26 lead into halftime, but Florida Southern bounced back in the second half.
"We started to make shots," Florida Southern head coach
Betsy Harris said. "We were struggling with that in the first half. I stressed that this could be their last game and they just had to want it more."
The Mocs (19-8) outscored the Knights 20-13 in the third as
Arielle Dabu's 3-pointer with 7:34 left started a 7-0 run that ended with the Mocs on top 38-32 at the 5:58 mark.
Florida Southern held that lead into the fourth quarter before Lynn tied it at 53-53.
That's when Wohlgemuth gave the Mocs back the lead and Florida Southern never trailed again.
"She turned the game around," Harris said. "She's only a freshman, so I hope to see a lot more of that in the next three years."
Senior
Julia Jenike led Florida Southern with 16 points and
Whitney Jacob added 10.
The Mocs were particularly effective from the free-throw line, going 20-for-21 from the stripe.
