WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Florida Southern College baseball fall short of another upset of No. 10 Rollins College in a 10-6 loss Tuesday night in a midweek non-conference matchup at Alfond Stadium.
The Mocs (21-16, 12-6 SSC) took the lead in the top of the third, but unable to hold on in the 10-6 loss. The Tars (26-10, 11-7 SSC) retook the lead with a big fifth inning and kept the Mocs at bay and win over Florida Southern after losing their series two weeks ago.
A great start to the game for the Mocs as
Nick Wells smashed a homer to left center and 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Tars were quick to respond with four runs in the bottom of the first as Jeslyn Whitehead hit an RBI single, score on a wild pitch, and two RBI single by Parker Smith.
Down by three, the Mocs narrowed the deficit with an RBI single by
Connor Berry that set up a bases loaded situation for
Jared DeSantolo. Ahead in the count, DeSantolo smashed a grand slam, the second one by the Mocs this season, to take a 6-4 lead in the top of the third.
The Tars answered with a solo homer by Herron to bring the score within one, before retaking the lead in the bottom of the fifth with another homer, this time a three-run home run by Santucci for an 8-6 lead by Rollins. Alternating pitchers every inning through the end of the game, the Tars held off a Moccasin comeback, scoring another two runs as insurance in the bottom of the eighth with a homer by Smith and 10-6 Rollins win.
