Mocs Minutes: Baseball and Tennis at Home while Three Teams Hit the Road

  • Florida Southern is in the mist of their 2022 season as they hosted Palm Beach Atlantic last weekend for a three game series. The Mocs came away with their first SSC series win of the season with a 4-2 win in a single game on Friday night before winning game one in the doubleheader 4-2 as well. The series went to the Mocs over the Sailfish with a 2-1 decision but FSC fell in the finale 5-7 despite a 4-0 lead in the first.
  • In conference play the Mocs added their fifth conference win to their SSC resume along with their first conference series. Despite the conference series win over the weekend, FSC remained at the bottom of the conference but moved up from sixth to second with a .271 batting average. They are fourth in hits with 135 and sixth with doubles 19. Freshman Destiny Colgate sits in the top five of the conference in hitting with a .383 going 23-for-60 on the season with eight runners batted in, seven runs, and five doubles.
  • On the season, senior Myah Moy is leading the Mocs with a .367 batting average going 36-for-98 from the plate with five doubles and 17 RBIs. Overall, Colgate is right behind Moy, batting .360 on the year with 41 hits, 15 doubles, 59 RBIs and a homerun. Jadin Dewith and Maddi Conner are both hitting in the 300s for the Mocs as Dewith is averaging .330 and Conner at .309. Leadoff, Dewith has 37 hits, 16 runs, two doubles, and five RBIs, while Conner has a homer, three triples, five doubles, 12 RBIs, and 29 hits. In the circle, Kayla Hickey owns a 5-4 record, pitching the most games for FSC with 18 having four complete games with 55 innings pitched striking out 29 batters. Mel Rogers is leading the way with strikeouts sending 42 batters back to the dugout.
  • Lynn is currently on a three-game losing streak not seeing a single win in conference action. Their last win was against non-conference Florida National as they defeated them 9-0 in five innings of play. The Fighting Knights last conference loss was against Embry-Riddle losing all three with scores of 9-1 in six innings, 7-5, and 6-4 last weekend.
  • In the SSC, Lynn is at the bottom of the standings with a .231 batting average. are the top team in the standings with a .178 batting average. The Fighting Knights have 36 runs on the season in 91 hits. They have brought in 32 runners, with 12 doubles, and three homers.On the season, Aymee Godmaire is leading the way for Lynn batting .348 going 23-for-66, with five doubles, five runs, and nine RBIs. Close behind Godmaire is graduate student Janelle Dominuez she is 32-for-96 on the season with 16 runs, seven doubles, eight home runs, with 27 RBIs. The Fighting Knights only have three pitchers in Faith Miller, Josey Sumpter, and Madison Prickett. Miller is leading the way in the circle with a 3.80 ERA pitching two complete games with six wins and 11 losses.
  • HISTORY: FSC has won the last three meetings against Lynn as the Mocs have defeated the Fighting Knights by a score of 4-2. The Mocs led the series against Lynn winning 53 of the 74 meetings.

  • Florida Southern returns home to host Lynn University after spending the last two weeks on the road. Last time out, the Mocs lost a close game to No. 10 Rollins College to a 10-6 score. After a solo homer by Nick Wells to start the game, the Mocs feel behind with a four-run inning by the Tars in the bottom of the first. Connor Berry then had an RBI single to narrow the deficit as Jared DeSantolo smashed a grand slam in the third to retake the lead. Rollins responded with six unanswered runs off three home runs for the Tars to win 10-6.
  • The Mocs are led by Nathan Chevalier with a .362 batting average, with Duncan Hunter and Jeff Liquori right behind, each batting over .300. Liquori is second in the conference with 13 home runs, leading the team, as Hunter is tied for third in the SSC with 10 homers on the season. Chevalier's .362 average is good for top 10 in the SSC, as Liquori is also tied for first in runs scored, 42 on the season.
  • On the mound, the Mocs are led by Nathan Madej, who earned his third SSC Pitcher of the Week honor this Monday. Madej leads the conference in opposing batting average, an impressive .154 and conference-best only 19 hits allowed. Other pitching leaders for Florida Southern include now regular started Dawson Lane with a 2.00 ERA and Aric McAtee with a team-high 48 strikeouts.
  • Lynn heads to Lakeland after losing their series 2-1 against Embry-Riddle last weekend. Most recently, the Fighting Knights outlasted Palm Beach Atlantic 6-5 in 13 innings on Tuesday for a midweek non-conference matchup. After initially going up 2-0 in the first inning, Lynn lost the lead, with a two-run deficit in the seventh, before they again took the lead in the bottom of the seventh by one. The Sailfish came back with a single run to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, before Rosselli hit an RBI single to win the game.
  • Overall, the Fighting Knights rely on big hitter Daniel Alfonso, who is top 10 in the conference in slugging percentage and OPS. Anthony Orrico is third in the conference in runs scored, with 40 on the season, as Lynn remains consistent at the plate. On the mound, the Fighting Knights use several pitchers, with Greyson Fletcher getting the most innings. As a team, the pitching crew average 5.06 ERA and have given up 32 homers.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs hold a 59-37 advantage when facing Lynn, including winning the last two meetings. Last time these two met, the Mocs took advantage of a two-run homer by Nick Wells and 2 RBI single by Joe Raffaele to lift the Mocs over Lynn 4-2 in seven innings last April.

  • No. 9 Florida Southern rebounded from its tough loss at nationally-ranked Rollins by defeating Saint Leo 25-17 at home this past Wednesday. Another tough test awaits the Mocs on Saturday as No. 14 Embry-Riddle looks to upset the Mocs in Daytona Beach.
  • Senior Hailey Daleo and sophomore Abby McFerren now share the team lead in points with 51. Daleo has a team-best 36 goals on the season along with 15 assists while McFerren has a team-best 26 assists to go along with her 25 goals. Senior Brenna Smith poured in five goals against the Lions to move to 30 goals on the season, becoming the second Moc in 2022 to achieve 30 goals. Junior Madison Tare is just on the doorstep of 30 goals as she sits with 29 heading into the final few games of the 2022 regular season.
  • Freshman Ellie Griffin continues to lead the team in draw controls with 60 this season. Fellow freshman Maria Reeves sits in second with 44. Fifth-year senior Abby Hammond continues to be the driving force on defense with a team-best 22 caused turnovers, eight more than her next highest teammate Lizzy Lynch who has 14.
  • In goal, graduate student Brittany Iamele and senior Patricia Werker continue to split time with Iamele boasting a 8.04 goals against average, a perfect 4-0 record and a .492 saves percentage. Werker has a 12.84 goals against average, a 6-2 record and a .427 saves percentage. Iamele has made 29 saves this season while Werker has made 70.
  • No. 14 Embry-Riddle has dropped two of its last three games, the Eagles first two losses of the season. The Eagles fell 11-10 at home to then-No. 9 Rollins before falling 16-15 on the road at Lynn. The Eagles also boast four wins over top-20 ranked opponents including then-No. 17 Mount Olive, then-No. 20 Assumption, then-No. 17 Seton Hill and then-No. 21 Saint Anselm.
  • Junior Murphy McDonough leads the Eagles in goals, assists and points this season. She has 53 goals, 31 assists and 84 points. Freshman Sallie Squire ranks second on the squad in goals with 51 while freshman Anna Maurer ranks second in assists with 28. Junior Elizabeth Ninesling leads the team in draw controls with 77 while Squire leads in caused turnovers with 22. In goal, freshman Aubrey Fixen has seen all but 72 minutes of action. She has an 11-1 record with a 10.35 goals against average. She has made 85 saves and has a .392 saves percentage.
  • HISTORY: Friday will mark just the third meeting between the Eagles and Mocs on the lacrosse field. FSC holds a perfect 2-0 record against ERAU. The two teams first met in 2018 in Daytona Beach where the Mocs won 20-6. The following year in 2019, the Mocs defeated ERAU 21-10 at home.

  • Records: #22 Florida Southern 10-6, 2-5 SSC | #8 West Florida 16-4, 9-0 GSC
  • Florida Southern is riding a two-game losing streak against top ranked opponents after last week's 5-2 loss to No. 4 Embry-Riddle and 5-2 loss to No. 16 Lynn University. Facing similar competition with No. 8 West Florida, the Mocs look to rebound and return to winning ways on Senior Day. Despite the losses, FSC showed great flights by Elliott Altman, who won in three sets, as well as Brandon Pham in two sets against Lynn. Erik Nordblom and Chris Fok Kow were singles flight winners against the Eagles last Saturday.
  • Undefeated at home before their last two losses against ranked opponents, the Mocs have Valentin Hertweck ranked 65th in singles play to lead the team. Hertweck was just short in an upset win over No. 3 Juan Ortiz Couder of Embry-Riddle last Saturday. Oscar Sohl nearly beat No. 15 Alexis Guedy of the Eagles in three sets as Florida Southern shows promise of big wins.
  • No. 17 West Florida is running with a four-game win streak, including a 7-0 win over No. 44 AUM last week. The Argos will face a top-ranked Saint Leo team before facing the Mocs on Saturday. West Florida is led by a doubles pairing of Facundo Bermejo and Tomas Descarrega, ranked 33rd in the nation. In singles competition, the Argos have Juan Cabrea ranked in top 15 of the nation. Serdar Bojadjiev boasts a 4-0 record against ranked opponents with Cabrera 2-0 in the same category.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs are still looking for their first win against the Argos, losing 21 straight since their first meeting in 1999. The last time these two teams met was February 10th, 2020, where the Mocs nearly got their first win in a close 4-3 loss to then No. 3 West Florida in Lakeland.

  • Florida Southern faces West Florida after a string of ranked opponents. The Mocs nearly lost their last contest in a 4-3 loss over No. 15 Tampa, but did upset then No. 28 Embry-Riddle 4-3 to end Senior Day on a high note. Match point in the contest against the Eagles went to now No. 72 singles player Olivia Bryant, who outlasted her opponent in an epic comeback in set two to win the match for the Mocs. Other winners against the Eagles were Flor Salerno and Mathilda Vidgren after the Mocs rebounded to win the doubles point in a great comeback by Vidgren and Laura Vetter.
  • Despite their loss to No. 15 Tampa, the Mocs won the doubles point with a great job by Vetter and Vidgren, with the other winning doubles pairing Vivien Charvatova and Maxima Ellenberg. Vidgren upset her No. 24 singles opponent in two sets, as Bryant continued her great run to win in two sets over her Tampa opponent.
  • West Florida is fresh off a 7-0 win over Shorter to rebound from a 4-3 loss to No. 30 AUM last week. Unable to get a win from many ranked opponents, the Argos look for similar competition with Florida Southern. Last time out the Argos swept the doubles competition from Shorter University and continued the momentum into singles play as they won each singles flight in two sets. The Argos are led by No. 27 singles player Irene Recuenco.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs are down in the overall record when facing West Florida, 4-11 overall. Last time these two met, the Argos had the upper hand in a 4-1-win February 10th, 2020 in Florida Southern's season opener.

  • No. 12 Florida Southern earned its second top-10 victory of the season this past Wednesday as the Moccasins defeated No. 10 Rollins 16-11. With the Mocs' early season victory over then-No. 1 Le Moyne, 2022 marks the first time in program history the Mocs have defeated two top-10 programs in a single season. The victory also gave FSC its fourth Sunshine State Conference victory of the season, tying a program record for most SSC wins in a season.
  • Junior Jeff Atlas scored four goals and handed out three assists in the Mocs victory over Rollins to bring his season totals to 37 goals and a team-best 43 assists for another team-high 80 points. Junior Sean Nolan, who had three goals and three assists in the victory as well now has a team-high 42 goals on the season along with 19 assists for 61 total points.
  • Senior Kevin Horwitz returned to dominant form against the Tars as he won 24 of his 31 faceoffs including dropping just two faceoffs the entire second half. He has won 66.8 percent of his faceoffs (258-386) this season. He currently has 148 ground balls this season and ranks second in the SSC in ground balls per game (10.57) while leading the conference in faceoff winning percentage (.668).
  • The fifth-year senior continues to re-write the Florida Southern record book as he holds both the career records for ground balls (420) and faceoffs won (820). He has also already broken the single season ground balls record in 2022 with his 148. He surpassed Dan Krispinsky (2011-14) who had 90 ground balls during the 2013 season. He also just recently set the single season record for faceoffs won with 258 so far in 2022. Andrew Fisher (2014-15) held the previous mark of 199 faceoffs won in 2015.
  • In goal for the Mocs, junior Maxwell Freestone is 8-3 on the season following the victory over Rollins. Freestone has made 123 saves this season and has an 11.64 goals against average with a .506 saves percentage. He currently ranks fourth in the SSC in both GAA and saves percentage.
  • The Mocs have several high rankings in the NCAA Division II men's lacrosse statistics. As a team, the Mocs lead the country in total assists (137) and total points (356) while ranking third in ground balls (547). They also have top-10 marks in faceoff win percentage (5th, .659), in assists per game (7th, 9.79), in points per game (7th, 25.43), in ground balls per game (8th, 39.07) and in scoring offense (9th, 15.64). Individually, Jeff Atlas and Kevin Horwitz hold top-five rankings. Atlas ranks fourth in assists per game (3.07) and points per game (5.71) while Horwitz ranks fifth in ground balls per game (10.57).
  • No. 14 Florida Tech enters Saturday's contest having won two-straight games over Palm Beach Atlantic and Embry-Riddle. Two of the Panthers four losses have come to No. 1 Tampa. The Panthers also have a 13-8 defeat at the hands of then-No. 13 Lenoir-Rhyne and a 10-9 non-conference loss to then-unranked Rollins.
  • Sophomore Zach Rozgonyi leads the Panthers in goals and points with 37 goals and 13 assists for a total of 50 points. Redshirt senior Justin Williams leads the team in assists with 22 while ranking second on the team in points with 42 thanks to his 20 goals on the season. Sophomore Jack Maranto and senior Ethan Tosheff have split time at the faceoff for Florida Tech. Maranto has won 56 of 135 (.415) while Tosheff has picked up 115 of 216 (.532). In goal, graduate student John Hulsman has seen all but 25 minutes of action as he has a 9-4 record with a 11.56 goals against average. He has a .510 saves percentage and 152 saves on the season.
  • HISTORY: Saturday morning will mark the 10th meeting between the Mocs and Panthers on a lacrosse field. The Mocs hold a slight 5-4 lead in the series but Florida Tech has won three of the last four meetings. The Panthers are 3-2 versus the Mocs at home and won the most recent meeting in Melbourne last season, 13-8.
