Mocs Minutes: Men's Lacrosse Senior Day and Softball Home Series Highlight Busy Weekend

  • Florida Southern is in the midst of their 2022 season as they traveled to Boca Raton to take on the Fighting Knights of Lynn University last weekend for a three game series. The Mocs came away with their second SSC series win of the season and first on the road with a 7-1 win and 3-0 loss to open up the series. In a single game on Friday the Mocs took the series winning 6-3 to seal the SSC series. Senior third baseman, Myah Moy earned her first home run of the season in the third game to lead FSC to a win.
  • In conference play the Mocs added their seventh conference win to their SSC resume along with their second conference series win. Despite the conference series win over the weekend, FSC moved up above PBA after the weekend series against Lynn. They stayed hitting a .271 batting average and sitting third in the conference with 158 hits for 22 doubles, one triple, and 57 RBIs.
  • On the season,senior Myah Moy is leading the Mocs with a .374 batting average going 40-for-115 from the plate with six doubles, 21 RBIs and a homer. Overall, Destiny Colgate is right behind Moy, batting .350 on the year with 43 hits, 16 doubles, 62 RBIs and a homerun. Jadin Dewith and Maddi Conner are both hitting in the 300s for the Mocs as Dewith is averaging .314 and Conner at .305. Leadoff, Dewith has 38 hits, 18 runs, two doubles, and five RBIs, while Conner has a homer, three triples, five doubles, 13 RBIs, and 32 hits. In the circle, Kayla Hickey owns a 5-4 record, pitching the most games for FSC with 21 having four complete games with 58 innings pitched striking out 30 batters. Mel Rogers is leading the way with strikeouts sending 44 batters back to the dugout.
  • No. 11 Tampa is on a two game winning streak capturing a 2-1 SSC series win at Barry this past weekend. The Mocs and Spartans had a non-conference doubleheader earlier in the season at Tampa where the Mocs put up a hard fight but fell in both games. First FSC took Tampa to eight innings, falling 3-2 on a walk-off to the then No. 14 ranked Spartans.
  • On the season, freshman Mariah Galhouse is leading the Spartans with 35 hits, three doubles, a homer, bringing in 14. Two other freshmen for Tampa are batting at the top with a .351 average and .340 in Avery Perkins and Lilly Kiester. Perkins is 20-for-57 with three doubles, a triple and five runners batted in. Kiester is 17-for-50 from the plate for four RBIs. In the circle, the Spartans are led by graduate student Corynn Miner with 12 appearances for a 2.28 ERA striking out 50 batters. Galhouse is supporting a 0.85 ERA with 114.2 innings pitched in 21 appearances striking out 68 batters.
  • HISTORY: Despite being on a four game losing streak against Tampa the Mocs have 77 wins in 129 meetings. The last win for FSC was home on March 7, 2021 with a 7-2 decision.

  • Florida Southern the Mocs fell 13-5 to the No. 11 Rollins College Tars on Wednesday afternoon at Henley Field in a midweek non-conference matchup. Although the Mocs struggled to score throughout the game, they were able to still get nine hits throughout the game, led by Duncan Hunter with three, Nathan Chevalier and Seth Cannady each with two, and Connor Berry with one. In the first inning Jared DeSantolo singled to the right field to which he was credited with two RBI as Jeff Liquori and Duncan Hunter scored to tie the game 3-3 in the first inning, but the Tars ran away with the lead despite a Connor Berry homer in the eighth and RBI in the ninth.
  • The Mocs sitting second in the conference, just four games behind the Spartans in what is expected to be a great series. Florida Southern continues to utilize Chevalier in the leadoff spot, where he continues to build from last weekend's great performance. Nick Wells, Hunter, and Liquori continue to shine with Liquori and Hunter third and fourth in the conference on home runs. Hunter's hit streak was extended to seven yesterday and team-high 19 games with two or more hits. Despite a .274 team batting average, the Mocs continue to pull out wins and emphasize their much-improved fielding and pitching.
  • Nathan Madej earned his fourth SSC Pitcher of the Week, and for a second week in a row, after another great performance, this time 10 strikeouts in seven innings last Friday against Lynn. With Madej continuing to perform, the Mocs have found recent success with Aric McAtee and Dawson Lane in their starts over the last couple weeks. In their last four starts, McAtee has 23 strikeouts and 0.33 ERA with Lane a 2.16 ERA with 24 strikeouts and three wins. As Tampa continues to lead in hitting and pitching, this weekend series is set to be a good one.
  • No. 2 Tampa hosts the Mocs after sliding into second in the latest NCBWA rankings after spending most of the season number one. The Spartans took the midweek off after winning their series against Barry last weekend. The Bucs nearly won the first game as they took an early 2-0 lead, but the Spartans walked off in the ninth with an RBI single by Lala. Game two of the series went to Barry as the Spartans 3-2 lead in the sixth went awry as the Bucs scored 11 runs over the next three innings to build a lead Tampa could not recover from. Tampa won the third game 5-3, holding off Barry from any upset.
  • The Spartans are led by Drew Ehrhard, Jordan Lala, Dan Sullivan, and E.J. Cumbo, each batting over .350 with over 100 at-bats. A powerhouse in the conference, Tampa has three of the top 10 batting averages in the league. Kian Knutson has a .444 average, with JD Urso .402. A conference-best, Knutson has a .583 on base percentage. Hitting isn't their only strong suit as Braydon Nelson leads the SSC with a 0.89 ERA and Haden Erbe has 79 strikeouts, second-best in the league. Nelson leads the conference with only four earned runs allowed and tied for first with only one homer allowed.
  • HISTORY: This will be the 222nd time these two teams have met, dating bck to 1957. A slight 113-108 advantage to the Mocs in the overall series, who have won three of the last five, including a 2-1 series win last year against the champs. Combined, the two programs have 17 Division II National Championships, as Florida Southern leads the division with nine, and Tampa with eight. The next best institution has three championships.

  • Florida Southern women's track heads back to Tampa for the third time this season to compete in the Sunshine State Meet. The Mocs most recently competed at the Flames Invitational in Cleveland, Tenn.
  • Sophomore Ellie Fluman ran the second fastest 10000m time in program history at the Flames Invitational and returns this Saturday to compete in the 1500m where the Mocs will enter nine competitors. The women will compete in six different events throughout the day including the 100m, 100m hurdles, 800m, 1500m, 5000m and 4x400m relay.
  • Florida Southern men's track picked up another school record breaking performance at the Flames Invitational as senior Mason Jones broke his own school mark in the 10000m. Jones will compete on Saturday as well as he will take the track in the 800m, 1500m and 4x400m relay. The men will compete in six events including the 400m hurdles, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 10000m and 4x400m relay.
  • Rebecca Ramsay of the women's team and Mitchell Kozik of the men's team will compete in the first hurdle events of the season for the Mocs. Ramsay will compete in the 100m hurdles while Kozik will take on the 400m hurdles.

  • No. 14 Florida Southern closes out the 2022 regular season Saturday afternoon versus Palm Beach Atlantic. The Mocs have already secured a spot in the 2022 Sunshine State Conference Tournament but will await Saturday's results to see who and where they will play. Following Saturday's contest, Florida Southern will honor 17 seniors in a postgame ceremony on Berend Field.
  • The seniors being honored are Jeff Atlas, Edward Beyer, Philip Chevrette, Justin Clement, Craig Connor, Maxwell Freestone, Noah Hess, Kevin Horwitz, Tyler Humphrey, Jordan Long, Shane Lumsden, Edward May, Andrew Medeiros, Sean Nolan, Trey Saunders, Lucas Sommers, and Cole Williams.
  • Atlas recently became the career record holder for points at Florida Southern with 221. He currently leads the 2022 squad in assists and points with 45 and 84, respectively, while ranking second in goals with 39. Nolan leads the team in goals with 47 so far this season. Atlas leads the Sunshine State Conference in assists per game and points per game while Nolan ranks second in the conference in goals per game.
  • Horwitz has been nothing short of dominant this season at the faceoff. He has won a school record 280 of 417 for a percentage of .671. He also has a team-high and school record 162 ground balls this season. He currently leads the SSC in faceoff percentage while ranking second in ground balls per game.
  • In goal for the Mocs, Freestone is 8-4 on the season with 143 saves. He has a 11.84 goals against average and a .516 saves percentage.
  • The Mocs have several high rankings in the NCAA Division II men's lacrosse statistics. As a team, the Mocs rank second in the country in total assists (142) while ranking third in ground balls (594) and points (374). The Mocs also rank sixth in assists per game (9.47) and faceoff winning percentage (.662), seventh in ground balls per game (39.60) and points per game (24.93), and ninth in scoring offense (15.47). Individually, Jeff Atlas and Kevin Horwitz hold top-10 rankings. Atlas ranks third in points per game (5.60) and fourth in assists per game (3.00) while Horwitz ranks third in ground balls per game (10.80) and seventh in faceoff winning percentage (.671).
  • The 2022 senior class has re-written the FSC Record Book. The Mocs have already tied the program record for most SSC wins in a season and could break the record with a win Saturday. A win Saturday would also give the Mocs 11 season victories which ties the program record for wins in a season. Atlas has broken the single season assists and points records this season with 45 assists and 84 points. The assists broke his own single season mark which he set in 2019 when he handed out 42 helpers. He has also re-written the career record book at FSC as he holds the records for career assists with 126 and career points with 221. He also ranks among the top-10 career leaders in games started, goals, hat tricks, shots and shots on goal. Horwitz has already broken the single season records for ground balls and faceoffs won in a season with 162 and 280, respectively. Over his career, he has picked up a school record 434 ground balls, over 100 more than the next highest Moc. He has also won a career record 842 faceoffs which is nearly 300 more than the next highest person on the list. He also ranks among the top-10 in games played and games started at FSC. Freestone currently ranks in the top-three in eight different career categories at FSC including second in shots faced and third in games played, games started, minutes, goals against average, saves, saves percentage and career wins. Nolan currently ranks second in the single season record book for shots with 160, in goals with 47 and shots on goal with 87. In the career records, he ranks among the top-10 in nine different categories including tying for the career record for most man down goals with three. He also ranks in the top-10 in games started, goals scored, assists, points, hat tricks, shots, shots on goal and man-up goals.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic is 5-8 this season including 1-5 in Sunshine State Conference play. The Sailfish have lost six of their last seven contests with the lone victory being a 12-11 voctory over Embry-Riddle at home.
  • Junior Henry Sloyan leads the Sailfish in goals (27), assists (10) and points (37). Graduate student Austin Evans and junior Hunter Hopman are tied for second on the squad in goals with 20 each while freshman Caleb Southard ranks second in assists with nine. Junior Noah McKouen has taken the majority of the faceoffs and has won 126 of 236 for a percentage of .534. Freshman Ben Lightsey mans the goal and has 138 saves. He has a 11.80 goals against average and a .491 saves percentage.
  • HISTORY: Saturday afternoon will mark the fifth meeting between the Mocs and Sailfish. FSC is a perfect 4-0 versus PBA including 2-0 at home. The Mocs have outscored the Sailfish 65-42 over the four contests.

  • #11 Florida Southern travels for a pair of games to southern Florida to close out the regular season after earning a 20-6 win in the home finale against Florida Tech (RV). The Mocs saw Madison Tare pace the offense with five goals while a trio of players recorded hattricks in Ellie Griffin, Hailey Daleo, and Abby McFerren. Brittany Iamele earned the win in the cage with six stops for her fifth win of the year.
  • On the year, Hailey Daleo is the team leader in points (59) and goals scored (41) while Abby McFerren is second on the team in points (54) and leading in assists (26). Madison Tare and Lizzy Lynch are tied with 47 points while Tare is second on the team in scoring with 36 goals. Five other Mocs have scored 20-plus goals this season.
  • In goal, Patricia Werker has played the most minutes (512:00), has 78 saves on 251 shots faced with a .422 save percentage while holding a 6-3 record going into the weekend. Brittany Iamele has played in 270:59 minutes with 37 stops on 100 shots for a .493 save percentage with a 5-0 record this season.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic will close the season against the Mocs after dropping six straight including a 16-7 loss to No. 25 Lynn Wednesday. Anna Laskaris was the leading scorer for the Sailfish with three goals while KiKi Cinotti and Ella Howlin each tallied two.
  • On the season, Laskaris is the leading scorer with 22 goals and sits atop the points leaderboard with 24 this year ahead of Cinotti at 22 (15 G, 7 A).
  • In goal, Courtney Rausch has played all 780 minutes with a 2-10 record tallying 111 saves on 434 shots faced for a .333 save percentage.
  • #25 Lynn enters the weekend hosting two final games: Tampa on Saturday, and Florida Southern on Sunday. When the Fighting Knights and Moccasins return to action, the game will resume at 1-0 (Lynn) with 14:47 on the clock due to the game halting due to weather back on April 2.
  • On the season, Sydney Hill leads the Fighting Knights in points (72) while she is second in goals (44) and assists (28). Kristyn Johnson is the teams leading scorer with 47 goals to her credit this season while holding down 58 points.
  • In goal, Ciara Moorman has played 555 minutes with 82 saves ahead of Carolyn Stein with 345 minutes of action and 35 saves.
  • HISTORY Florida Southern remains 2-0 all-time against Lynn, both wins coming in 2021 with the latest full game being a 21-5 victory for the Moccasins on April 28, which Hailey Daleo scored nine goals en route to setting the program single game scoring record. The Moccasins are 3-0 all-time against Palm Beach Atlantic with a 1-0 mark in West Palm Beach. In the latest matchup, the Mocs defeated the Sailfish 20-5 back on April 3, 2021. In that win over PBA, FSC saw Hailey Daleo and Madison Tare each score four goals to propel the Mocs.
