Mocs Minutes: Baseball and Track On the Road to Close Out Busy April

Live Coverage |
  • Opponent: Embry-Riddle
  • Dates | Times: April 29-30, 2022 | 6:00 PM / 1:00 PM / 4:00 PM
  • Location: Lakeland, Fla. | Sliwa Stadium
  • Records: Florida Southern 26-18, 17-7 SSC | Embry-Riddle 20-23, 8-16 SSC
  • Florida Southern enters this weekend's conference series ranked 17th in the nation, according to the latest NCBWA poll, and second in the conference standings. The Mocs are riding a huge series win over No. 2 Tampa last weekend, which was highlighted by a 5-0 shutout win Friday night and 7-2 game two doubleheader win. The only loss of the series was a close 4-3 game which the Spartans walked off in the ninth. The series was a big team effort with great pitching by Nathan Madej, Ryan Langford, and Dawson Lane. Aric McAtee had a great game in the first doubleheader game, but unable to hold on as the Spartans won. Jared DeSantolo and Connor Berry had great games in the RBI category, with Nathan Chevalier a huge four hits in the second doubleheader game.
  • With a consistent lineup the last few weeks, the Mocs seem secure in their positions as Chevalier continues to hit well in the leadoff spot and Jeff Liquori continuing to score in his newer cleanup spot. Duncan Hunter now cracks the top 10 in batting average, with a .362 team-high, as Chevalier is right behind with a .356. Liquori sits in third with a .318 average. Liquori and Hunter sit in the top five in the conference in home runs with 13 and 11 respectively. Liquori leads the conference with 48 runs scored and top 10 in slugging and OPS along with Hunter.
  • On the mound, the Mocs continue to improve each week on their starting rotation and relievers. Madej won his third consecutive and fifth total SSC Pitcher of the Week award, and won NCBWA South Region Pitcher of the Week after last week's Tampa performance. McAtee leads the team in strikeouts with 55, and ties Madej with six wins on the season. Lane continues to show out, including a 2.02 ERA and in the top 10 in nine different SSC categories. Madej leads with 10 different top categories. The team has a 4.25 ERA and third best pitching in the conference. Langford also cracked the top 10 of FSC history with eight saves so far in a single season.
  • Embry-Riddle hosts Florida Southern after losing their last four games, including a series sweep by Saint Leo. The Eagles were fresh off a series win over Florida Tech, before losing in a non-conference matchup against Georgia Southwestern State in a 10-9 walk off loss in the 11th inning. Embry-Riddle lost their Friday night game against the Lions 6-4 before a doubleheader loss 5-3 and 3-0. Both the Friday night and Saturday game one matches were a result of a late inning rally by the Lions after the Eagles had the lead in both games, but unable to hold off a good Saint Leo team.
  • The Eagles are led by Jeremy Kennedy-Davis at the plate with a .338 batting average and team-best 47 hits. Andrew Martinez and Zach Coldsnow each have a .277 average, with Coldsnow tied for fourth in the conference with four triples on the season. Martinez has showed off his speed with 14 stolen bases this season, a team-high and good for eighth in the conference overall. On the mound, Kelsey Ward leading the pack with 56 batters struck out, good for top ten in the conference. Ward also leads the team with only 51 hits allowed and two triples all year. Garrett Goodall is a top ten conference leader with 68.0 innings pitched this season and allowing nine doubles.
  • HISTORY: Both teams have not played each other much as they enter this weekend with a 15-6 FSC advantage in the overall record. With continued success on the road, the Mocs look to add to their win column this weekend. Last time these two met was March 31st, 2019 in Lakeland, when the Mocs won 8-3 off homers by Vaun Brown and Zach Scott.
  • Meet: UNF Invitational
  • Dates: April 29-30, 2022
  • Location: Jacksonville, Fla. | Jax Track at Hodges Stadium
  • Florida Southern men's track travels north to Jacksonville, Fla. to compete in the UNF Invitational. The Mocs had several top performances last season at the UNF Invitational with Mason Jones running what was then his fastest 5,000m time in program history. Mitchell Kozik also ran what was then the school record in the 3,000m steeplechase last season in Jacksonville.
  • The men will send competitors in the 1500m, 3000m steeplechase and the 5000m which will all be contested Friday night. Josh Wagner, Alex Guy, Bryson Yamnitz and Brady Zimmerman will take on the 1500m while Kozik will try to lower his school record time in the 3000m steeplechase. Jones will also look to lower a school record in the 5000m.
  • The Mocs added an additional regular season meet onto the end of the 2022 schedule as FSC will travel to Cleveland, Tenn. for the third time this season for the Lee University Last Chance Meet on Saturday, May 14.
  • Florida Southern women's track competed in just one event last season at the UNF Invitational as Ellie Fluman along with alumna Ysabella Guerra ran in the 5000m.
  • Jinia Johnson and Marisa Kortright will take on the 1500m Friday night while Carolina Titus enters the 3000m steeplechase. Fluman along with Emma Mussante and possibly Alayna Goll will run the 5000m as well. Capri Procopio and Johnson are scheduled to run the 800m on Saturday with Mussante and Titus being possible entrants as well.
