Mocs Take Down No. 9 Rollins in Sweeping Doubleheader

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Florida Southern College baseball team come out on top sweeping a doubleheader against No. 9 Rollins Sunday afternoon at Alfond Stadium. Mocs win the series 2-1 over the Tars.

The Mocs (18-15, 9-6 SSC) had a leadoff homer by Jeff Liquori to start the first game of the doubleheader, with another solo homer by Duncan Hunter enough for the 2-1 game one win. The Tars (23-9, 9-6 SSC) scored a run in the fourth of game two, but not enough as the Mocs win again with a 2-1 score and series win.

FLORIDA SOUTHERN 2, ROLLINS 1
The Mocs had a great start to the first game of the doubleheader with a first pitch leadoff homer by Liquori for the first leadoff homer by the Mocs since April 24th of last year. Both teams traded a couple hits, but not runs through two innings as it stayed a 1-0 Moccasin advantage.

In the bottom of the third, the Tars tied the game with a solo homer by Herron. Despite the occasional hits, the game continued to remain a battle at the mound as Aric McAtee continued to keep the game even with six strikeouts in seven innings. Justin Alintoff started for the Tars and pitched the entire game.

A tie game into the top of the fifth allowed a solo homer by Hunter to regain the lead for the Mocs. Despite just five hits in the game, defense by Florida Southern served the storyline to keep the game scoreless for the rest of the game.

Christian Suarez came in to relieve in the eighth and kept the game a 2-1 Florida Southern lead. Ryan Langford entered in the ninth for the save as he struck out two to seal the win for the Mocs. Rollins outhit the Mocs in the first game, nine-to-five, but unable to score as they left 10 on base during the game.

FLORIDA SOUTHERN 2, ROLLINS 1
Another big start for the Mocs as they started Dawson Lane at the mound and carried Florida Southern through six great innings and six seven strikeouts. Florida Southern had early hits by Ryan Jenkins, DeSantolo, Joe Raffaele, and Nathan Chevalier but scoreless through three innings. Lane continued to work, including a crucial strikeout with two outs left in the second and bases loaded to keep the game even at zero.

Mocs were first to score as they took advantage of an RBI single by Hunter, as Jenkins score. Ahmad Fitts responded with an RBI for Chevalier to score and a 2-0 Moccasin lead in the top of the fourth. Rollins answered with a single run off an RBI single by Howard in the bottom of the fourth, but still left two on.

Both teams traded hitless innings before a big opportunity by the Mocs in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded but fall short in tallying a run to keep a 2-1 FSC lead. Logan Verrino relieved Lane in the seventh to again keep the score 2-1, with Jake Curry in the eighth to help the Mocs escape another bases loaded scenario. Collin Camarigg earned the save with his performance in the bottom of the ninth and secure the Moccasin 2-1 victory. Undeterred from Rollins on base, the Mocs worked out two innings with bases loaded to leave 14 total Tars on base while only giving up one run.
