LAKELAND, Fla. - The Florida Southern College women's soccer team earned a 0-0 draw against Georgia College on Friday night's season opener at Berend Field.
It was a one-sided effort for the Moccasins (0-0-1), as they dominated the visiting Bobcats (0-0-1) in every statistical category, but were unable to tally a game-winning goal. The team amassed 17 total shots over the course of the 90-minute game, allowing just one to the opposition, which came extremely late in the second half.
Goalkeeper
Meghan Kriney earned her first career shutout as she started the game in goal for the Mocs, calmly rejecting any scoring chances from the Bobcats. Her shining moment of the game came with just over 36 minutes to play in the second half when she ran up to clear the ball off the edge of the box, beating a Georgia College forward who had made her way in all alone.
The Moccasins, who boast 18 new players from last year's roster, had a few of them contribute some quality scoring chances.
Malia Brost made her debut as a freshman, collecting two shot attempts through 43 minutes of work, including a golden opportunity that trickled just wide towards the end of the first half.
Angelina Coelho had an impressive debut for the Moccasins as well, coming up with four scoring chances with one shot on goal in 53 minutes of work after coming off the bench.
Florida Southern had a flurry of opportunities in the waning minutes of the contest, with
Lindsey Meyer firing two shots on goal in her debut with the Mocs. The transfer student from Northern Kentucky was superb, as she played the full 90 minutes and tallied a team-leading five shot attempts.
Another bright spot for the Moccasins in the season opener was a solid performance from the back-line unit of
Brooke Lowery,
Madison Male, and
Morgan Collica. All three players were on the pitch for the entirety of the contest, doing their part to hold the visiting Bobcats to just one shot attempt.
This year, all regular-season games are played to 90 minutes only, regardless of the score, in contrast to years past, when teams would play twenty minutes of sudden-death soccer before declaring a tie.
After a strong showing that resulted in a draw, the Mocs will look ahead to Sunday morning's showdown with the Newberry College Wolves.
Newberry lost their season opener to Saint Leo University on Friday night by a final score of 1-0, and the game on Sunday will be played at Berend field, with kickoff slated for 11 a.m.
