BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's soccer team earned its first Sunshine State Conference win of the 2022 season with a 3-0 shutout of the Lynn Fighting Knights at Bobby Campbell Stadium Saturday night.
The Mocs (4-1-2, 1-1-0 SSC) had two goals from
Caitlyn Lowery in the game for a big road conference win early in the season. The Fighting Knights (2-5-0, 0-3-0 SSC) had the shot advantage over the Mocs 11 to nine but were unable to find the net for the Florida Southern win.
Early attacks by Lynn posed a threat for Florida Southern with several shots by the Fighting Knights, but none hit the back of the net. Despite the early push, the Mocs found an opportunity with
Brooke Lowery that was on target but saved by the Lynn keeper.
Halfway through the first half, Florida Southern stopped a midfield push by the Fighting Knights and sped downfield where
Lindsey Meyer had the touch to C. Lowery for the first Moccasin goal and Lowery's third consecutive game with a goal this season. Although Lynn battled in the attacking third, Florida Southern keeper
Jenny Staten had two big saves in the first half to keep the Mocs with a 1-0 at the break.
Fresh off the halftime break, the Mocs took another big attack in the first minute of the second half, where Meyer had a deep shot for her first goal as a Moccasin. Five minutes later, C. Lowery scored her second goal of the game, and her fifth of the season, from another Meyer assist.
Down three in the second half, Lynn continued to let shots fly, but great defense by the Mocs prevailed. Staten shut out the Fighting Knights with seven total saves in the game, five of which came in critical moments of the second half. Meyer and
Tatum Albrecht added shots on goal at the midpoint of the second half, as Lynn's goalie made the save. Florida Southern continued their defensive strength to end the game with a 3-0 Moccasin win on the road.
The Mocs will prepare for another midweek road game as they travel to No. 3 Embry-Riddle for a Wednesday matchup, set for a 7 p.m. start.
