DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's soccer team scored early and nearly upset the No. 2 Embry-Riddle squad in a 1-1 draw Wednesday night at the ERAU Soccer Stadium.
The Mocs (4-1-3, 1-1-1 SSC) scored in the first three minutes with a goal by
Lindsey Meyer and finished with great defense to end the game in a tie. The Eagles (7-0-1, 2-0-1 SSC) found themselves down for the first time this season but responded with a first-half goal to work their part in their first draw of the season.
A corner kick by the Mocs crowded the box on the attack which the Eagles initially headed out, but right to
Morgan Collica for Meyer, who scored in her second consecutive game and goal number two on the season. Florida Southern has continued to show its strength on the attack with a leading goal in the first five minutes of three of their last four games. The same continued tonight against the undefeated Eagles, ranked second in the nation in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll.
The Eagles responded at the 17-minute mark for a 1-1 tie after a goal by Saba Amiri, assisted by conference leader Marie Myhrvold Seim. Meyer continued shots to put the Mocs back on top but just off as both teams battled in the first half. Keeper
Jenny Staten had two saves in the first 45 minutes that kept the game tied at halftime.
After early shots to start the second, Florida Southern went back-to-back with shots on goal, one each by
Malia Brost and
Caitlyn Lowery. Embry-Riddle's keeper Oona Jokinen finished with three saves in the game, each in the second half, after Meyer added another shot on goal halfway through the second. Staten faced three shots early in the second, but not threatening the net to finish the game in a 1-1 tie.
Florida Southern finished with a slight advantage in shots, 11-to-nine, and had four shots on goal. Staten had two saves in the first, as the Embry-Riddle keeper stopped three potentially game-winning goals by the Mocs in the second half.
The Mocs return home to host conference opponent Florida Tech this Saturday, Sept. 24
th, set for a 7 p.m. start at Berend Field.
