Mocs Minutes: Men's Soccer and Volleyball in Action at Home

  • Florida Southern continue their home campaign at Berend Field to host non-conference opponent Atlantis in an exhibition match. The Mocs are coming off an upsetting loss to Sunshine State Conference opponent Lynn on Saturday evening with a devastating penalty kick goal in the 81st minute of action to capture the Fighting Knights first win of the 2022 season. The Mocs have nine goals on the year along with allowing their opponents to score nine as well. Where FSC is leading is between the poles as keeper, AJ Pearce has tallied 26 saves to the Mocs opponents 20.
  • Individually, Henri Tophoven is the leading Moc thus far this season, tying the school record in goals scored in five consecutive matches. Southern has nine goals on the season with seven being from former United Soccer Coaches national player of the week. The other two goals come from junior Kyle Carr and sophomore Dino Leddie against Delta State during the Mocs opening weekend in Mississippi. Florida Southern has seven total Mocs with at least one assist in Felix Tonne (2), Victor Beker, Luca Bernoth, Leoluca Diefenbach, Sam Michaels, and Daniel Miranda.
  • Atlantis is coming into the contest against FSC on a two game win streak. The Atlanteans are .750 thus far and have only competed in away games. Atlantis is sitting at the top of their conference (USCAA) with a 2-0 record.
  • The Atlanteans have 36 goals on the season averaging 4.50 goals per game. Atlantis is being led by Sergio Medina with 10 goals and two assists for 22 points. Behind Medina is Ricardo Pacheco with four goals and three other Atlanteans with three goals apiece in Lucas Labat, Francesco Valdez, and Pedro Barillari. Labat and Valdez each have two assists as well along with teammates Mauricio Canete, Luis Guerra, Christian Hernandez, David Name, Alejandro Espositio, and Jose Jienez. Randy Motta also has contributed four assists, while Diego Guatemala has three to close out the top performers for the Atlantis Alanteans.

  • Florida Southern faces their toughest opponent thus far in the 2-22 season with No. 3 Embry-Riddle. Mocs won their last contest in a 3-0 win over Lynn and their first conference win of the season. In her third consecutive game this year, Caitlyn Lowery scored a goal in the win, while adding a second goal in the second half, her fifth goal of the season. Florida Southern's first goal game by C. Lowery from passes by Courtney Chomko and Lindsey Meyer. Meyer went on to score in the first minute of the second half, her first goal as a Moccasin, with a great pass by Tatum Albrecht and a 2-0 FSC lead early. Five minutes later, C. Lowery added her second goal of the game, again by Chomko and Meyer.
  • For the first time since playing Nova Southeastern, the Mocs were outshot in their game against Lynn, by just two shots, however, were even in shots on goal, with seven. Despite Saturday's game, Florida Southern continues to average more shots per game than their opponents and has 54 shots on goal. C. Lowery leads the Mocs with five goals, with 10 different FSC goal scorers this year to tally the 20 goals thus far.
  • With her second shutout of the season, keeper Jenny Staten had a season-high seven saves, the best by the three FSC keepers this year. Despite facing fewer shots than their opponents, the Florida Southern defense will be key in facing their toughest opponent this year.
  • #3 Embry-Riddle hosts the Mocs undefeated and the No. 3 team in the nation according to the latest United Soccer Coaches poll. The Eagles shut out their last five opponents in a row, with the last two being conference wins against Tampa and Barry. Marie Myhrvold Seim led the Eagles with two goals in the game, to bring her season total to eight on the year. The third goal by Grace Foyer sealed the Embry-Riddle win with five saves by keeper Oona Jokinen./li>
  • Myhrvold Seim leads the way for the Eagles with eight goals this year and one assist. Foyer is second on the team with three goals and three additional goal scorers on the squad. Myhrvold Seim has three SSC Offensive Player of the Week awards this year and Jokinen has only allowed two goals all season, with 16 saves and seven wins on the year.
  • HISTORY: Embry-Riddle has a slight edge in wins against Florida Southern in their history, with five wins for the Eagles compared to the Mocs' four. There have been three times in their playing history. The last time these two met, the Eagles won 1-0 in Lakeland, and only one win for Florida Southern when in Daytona Beach.

  • Florida Southern returns home Thursday to take on Nova Southeastern in another Sunshine State Conference match-up. The Moccasins are coming off back-to-back sweeps of Florida Tech and Saint Leo on the road this past week and look to extend their win streak to three on Thursday.
  • Graduate student libero Beatrice Formilan was named the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts against FT and SLU. It marked her third career DPOTW honor and first of 2022. She was a two-time winner last season. Formilan leads the backline for the Mocs and is averaging 4.54 digs per set this season to rank fourth in the SSC. At the net it's sophomore Madison Fowler leading the way with 26 total blocks. She is averaging 0.81 per set so far in 2022. Joining her in double-figures are freshman Morgan Word (17), graduate student Emma Shaddix (17), and junior Mackenzie Petermann (10).
  • Petermann continues to lead the Mocs offensively with 3.78 kills per set which ranks her fourth in the SSC so far this season. Senior Ali Travis (2.81) and Shaddix (2.11) rank second and third on the team, respectively, and are each averaging over 2.10 kills per set this season. Senior Mika Garza continues to run the offense from her setter position and is averaging 10.05 assist per set to rank fifth in the SSC. Junior Cassidy Markel returned from injury against Saint Leo and split time with Garza at setter. Markel posted 17 assists in the match and is now averaging 5.67 per set. Travis leads a potent serving attack with a team-high 15 service aces this season. Garza and Word sit right behind with 14 and 12 aces, respectively.
  • Nova Southeastern is coming off its biggest win of the season so far as the Sharks defeated No. 1 Tampa at home this past Saturday in a five-set thriller. The Sharks became the first team to defeat Tampa since Oct. 8, 2021 when the Sharks took down No. 1 Tampa in Tampa, 3-1. The most recent victory snapped a 31-match win streak by the Spartans. NSU is one of just two programs to claim a victory over Tampa over the last two seasons.
  • Junior Elizabeth Price leads the NSU offense with 3.54 kills per set. She is joined by sophomore Kate Mihacevich (3.11) and freshman Taylor Stockman (2.98) as the three nearly all average over 3.00 kills per set this season. Senior Madison Cook has been running the offense at setter after returning to the Sharks lineup following their opening weekend tournament. She is averaging 11.52 assists per set to lead the entire SSC. Three Sharks have double-digit service aces led by junior Preslee Brooksbank who has 12 this season.
  • Defensively, Brooksbank and Price lead the way in the backline. Brooksbank is averaging 3.50 digs per set at libero while Price has earned 3.37 digs per set from her outside hitter position. At the net, the Sharks boast three student-athletes with 20 or more blocks this season. Sophomore Jordan Chessar leads the team with 28 total blocks.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs and Sharks have met 39 times on the volleyball court with Florida Southern owning a 31-8 record over that span. The Mocs have won seven of the most recent 10 matches but all three of those losses have come in the four most recent meetings. NSU and FSC split the series last season with each team winning on its home court while NSU swept the series in 2019. The last victory for NSU in Lakeland occurred in 2019 and it was the first win by NSU in Lakeland since 2009.
