LAKELAND, Fla. - The Florida Southern College women's soccer team defeated Florida Tech by a score of 1-0 in a gritty effort that saw resilient defense and a clutch goal from freshman
Angelina Coelho Saturday night at Berend Field.
Coelho scored her third career goal with a big penalty kick in the 62
nd minute after
Morgan Elliott drew a foul in the box to break a scoreless tie. FSC keeper
Jenny Staten stopped all seven shots on goal, pitching her 13
th career shutout, and she now stands alone at second overall in the record books for most career shutouts by a Moccasin player.
From start to finish, the Panthers (4-3-1, 2-2-0 SSC) dominated the game offensively, but the Moccasins (5-1-3, 2-1-1 SSC) didn't allow many quality chances as the back-line unit of
Brooke Lowery and
Morgan Collica held the line in the win.
It looked like Florida Tech was poised to start the scoring, after one of the Panther forwards broke free from the top of the box, in the eighth minute. Staten stayed composed, stopping the first of 21 shot attempts that she faced Saturday night.
The Moccasins trailed in attempted shots, 21-to-three, and had just one shot on goal, which hit the back of the net. Nonetheless, it was enough behind a staunch defensive effort from a Moccasin team that was forced to play with just ten players after a red card was issued with roughly ten minutes to play.
Staten and the Mocs weathered the storm of attacks in the final minutes, using expert-like clock management and timely blocks to keep Florida Southern up by one for the remainder of the game.
Jordan King and
Tatum Albrecht played all ninety minutes in the big conference win.
Florida Southern has now gone 3-0-1 over the course of their last four games, outscoring their opponents 13-2 over that span. The Moccasins are scheduled to be back in action next Saturday when they travel to Saint Leo University for a 7 p.m. game.
