LAKELAND, Fla. – A callback to the 2021-22 Sunshine State Conference Championships Thursday afternoon at the Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center Pool as the No. 16 Florida Southern College men's swimming team was just topped by No. 15 Nova Southeastern 132-129 for an NSU win.
The Mocs took on the Sharks on short notice after the meet originally scheduled for Saturday was moved to this afternoon and had the team lead for most of the meet. The winner was decided in the last event of the day, the 400 freestyle relay, where the Mocs won the 2021-22 SSC Championship on the exact same event and opponent, but this time the Sharks were victorious with a first-place finish.
Florida Southern started hot with a first and second-place finish in the 200 medley relay to start the day, and
Keith Peristeridis with his first win of the meet, winning the 1000 free with a B standard time of 9:19.81 and 22 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Freshman
Thomas Wooldridge finished third with a time of 9:45.74. K. Peristeridis went on to win the 500 free as well, with a time of 4:34.01.
Brandon Wilson was another event winner, with a 50.68 time in the 100 back, ahead of
William Eriksson in third with 51.46.
A great job in the breaststroke by the Mocs as
Matteo Zampese won the 100 (56.43) and 200 breast (2:03.83) as
Nicko Peristeridis was second in both events (58.03 100 breast; 2:04.11 200 breast). A podium sweep in the 200 breast as
Boris Mitev was third with 2:11.51.
Kyle Micallef was the final Moccasin event winner with a 50 free time of 20.42 (B standard time) and finished second in the 100 free (47.33).
Other podium finishers included
Milosz Mencel second in the 200 free (1:45.93), Wilson third in the 200 back (1:54.32), and again third in the 400 IM (4:11.40). In the 100 fly,
Theo Peristeridis finished second with a time of 51.30 and third with 51.85.
The Mocs will host Saint Leo for Senior Day tomorrow, Jan. 13, at 3 p.m. at the Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center Pool. Faculty Recognition will take place before the meet, with a Senior Day Ceremony during an intermission break of the meet against the Lions.
