Mocs Minutes: Swimming Closes Out Home Portion of 2022-23 Schedule; Basketball Hits the Road

  • No. 16 Florida Southern men will play host to Nova Southeastern this afternoon in the first meet in over two months for Florida Southern swimming. The Mocs will have Senior Day on Friday, Jan. 13, against the Lions with a senior ceremony taking place during an intermission break. Last time out, Florida Southern had a second-place finish in the Panther Invitational back in November, with Matteo Zampese named the SSC Men's Swimmer of the Week for his performance in the invite. Sprinter Kyle Micallef holds the best time in the SSC with a 19.82 B standard time in the 50 free, and another B standard time in the 100 free (44.88). In the mile swim, Mocs hold spots four-to-six with Oliveira, Keith Peristeridis, and Wooldridge with B standard times. Other B standard times include Brandon Wilson in 200 back, K. Peristeridis & Oliveira in 200 free and 500 free, and Zampese in the 100 breast & 200 breast (best times in SSC; 53.78 for 100 and 1:58.01 for 200). Zampese added B standard in 100 fly (48.35) and SSC-best 1:48.78 in the 200 IM, and Tristan Clanton in the 200 fly (1:49.42).
  • No. 23 Florida Southern women won the Panther Invitational in the last meet back in November, a spot they held all weekend. Olivia Miles led the way with a B Standard finish in the 1650 freestyle. Florida Southern has battled tough competition this season with Division I Arkansas, FSU, and UNF early in the season. Despite the early losses, Florida Southern performed well at the Shark Invitational and won its conference opener against Rollins. Other B standard times for the Mocs include: Erin McCann in the 200 (1:51.02) & 500 (4:59.84) free, Miles (5:00.55) and Maja Eriksson (5:03.20) in the 500 free, Emily Peck in the 200 breast (2:19.06), Elizabeth Sikes (2:05.08) and Allie Brinton (2:05.20) in the 200 fly, and Miles in the 400 IM (4:28.00).
  • No. 15 Nova Southeastern men sent three in the CSCAA Open Water Nationals (5000m race) last month with a top-20 finish by Aidan Plieger in the Sharks last competition. In SSC competition, NSU swept Lynn University in a dual meet, where the men won 179.5 -72.5. Event winners included Jarryd Baxter in the 50 & 100 back and 100 IM, Kaden Mackey in the 50 free, Thomas Flower in the 100 free, Gustav Henriksen in the 500 free, Umberto Marsic in the 50 fly, and two relay wins. SSC Swimmer of the Week winners include Luca Alessandrini and Thomas Flower.
  • No. 3 Nova Southeastern women have won three dual meets this year, with their two losses coming against Division I opponents to start the season. A second-place finish in the Fall Frenzy at Queens took place in November. Last time out, the Sharks beat Lynn 149-94 with eight event wins, including a 400 free relay win. Savanna Best had two event wins, the 50 breast, and 100 breast. A podium sweep in the 100 IM sealed the win for the Sharks.
  • Saint Leo men, registering votes in the CSCAA December Poll, competed in the Spartan Invite last month, after losing to No. 9 Tampa in November. The Lions have two dual meet wins, against Rollins and Lynn. Saint Leo opened the season against No. 25 Rollins, where the Lions won by one point in a narrow 131-130 victory. Lions won nine of the 14 possible events, with Nino Viallon with three events himself. Second win of the season was a 134.5-70.5 win against the Fighting Knights, as Lamar Rodov took the sprint events.
  • Saint Leo women have yet to win a dual meet, losing to Tampa, Lynn, and Rollins. The Lions have Elze Bielskute (50 free), and Isabelle Sering (100 free & 100 fly – best in SSC) with NCAA B standard times. Sering's 100 fly provisional time was the only event win for the Lions against No. 5 Tampa back in November. Against Lynn, Vanda Voroshazy won two events in the 200 fly and 200 IM. Vittoria Bonsanti Feniello won the 500 and 1000 free.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs have faced the Sharks already this season when Nova hosted the Shark Invitational in October, where the men's team finished second behind Tampa but beat Nova. The women's team finished third in the Shark Invitational, behind both Tampa and NSU. Historically, both the men and women have performed great against Saint Leo, winning nearly 75% of its matchups. A top-25 battle against Nova Southeastern on Thursday will highlight the weekend, ahead of a senior day ceremony on Friday against the Lions.

  • Florida Southern is on a two game win streak and looking ahead to Rollins on Saturday with another road contest. The Mocs took on Saint Leo on Wednesday night and came away with a 67-61 victory in Jenkins Field House. With the win, head coach Megan Dzikas '12 earns her first home win defeating her former school where she was an assistant. In the win, graduate student Ashley Shell led the way with her third double-double of the year with 22 points and 10 boards. Sophomore was the only other Moc to finish in double-digit scoring with 10 points, followed by junior Maria Llorente and freshman Amari Jackson putting up nine points from the bench.
  • As a team, FSC is averaging 72.3 points per game, while their opponents average 66.9. Now with eight conference matchups and 15 games total the Mocs remain in the middle of the Sunshine State Conference at fifth. Southern is the top team in the free throw percentage for the third consecutive week hitting 221 of 279 shots for a .792 average. On the defensive side, as a team the Mocs are second in the conference with 180 offensive boards for an average of 12.0 rebounds per game and second with steals coming in with 154 averaging 10.27 steals per game.
  • Shell continues to lead FSC in the conference moving to fifth in scoring with 220 points averaging 14.7 points per game. The Deerfield Beach native, moved from seventh to fifth on the defensive end with 110 boards for a 7.3 rebound per game. Domenica Zamora remains second in the SSC with 3-point field goals per game with averaging 2.5 shots beyond the arc and a .440 percentage overall sinking 33 of 72 shots. Along with Zamora's top performances from the field she is in the top five with free throw percentage shooting .879, assists (4.5 apg) and steals (2.3 spg).
  • Rollins dropped their third straight game, falling to the Lynn Fighting Knights on Wednesday by a score of 70-51. The loss drops Rollins to 6-9 on the year with a 1-7 record in SSC play. With the loss, the Tars are on a three game losing streak with the last three all being in conference action. Rollins last win was against Florida Tech on Jan. 4 with a 71-47 win at home.
  • As a team, the Tars are in the bottom portion of the SSC sitting last in the offensive end with 872 points for an average of 58.1 points per game, field goals with 321 made of 905 attempts averaging .355, and in the 3-point percentage with an average of .285 hitting 108 shots beyond the arc, the team is also sitting in the bottom for free throw percentage shooting just .607 from the line. To change it up on the defensive side Rollins is third with team rebounds averaging 38.7 boards per game.
  • Rollins does not have a player scoring in the top of the SSC but leading the Tars is sophomore Aaliyah Irizarry-Perez playing and starting in all 15 games scoring on average 9.5 points per game with 7.4 rebounds per game,19 total steals, 21 assists, and seven blocks.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs hold a 58-46 record against the Tars including a current eight-game win streak. Florida Southern is 21-23 all-time against Rollins on the road. And is 45-35 in Jenkins Field House. Florida Southern is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings against the Tars as the Mocs defeated Rollins on their home court in the final meeting between the two teams that ended with a 82-54 decision.

  • Florida Southern dropped its third-straight contest Wednesday night and looks to bounce back on the road against a tough Rollins squad. The Moccasins saw freshman Alex Steen register his first career double-double with a career-high 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in the Wednesday night loss to Saint Leo. Redshirt sophomore Dominick Denny came off the bench and provided 12 points, ahead of junior Connor Raines with 11. Redshirt senior E.J. Dambreville was on pace to register a double-double but finished with 11 boards and eight points. Redshirt sophomore Tray Alexander played 33 minutes and had nine points while redshirt sophomore Luke Anderson rounded out the scoring with six points.
  • Redshirt sophomore Jadin Booth continues to lead the team in scoring, averaging 18.5 points per game. Dambreville sits second on the squad with 17.3 ppg. In total, four Mocs are averaging double-figures as Booth and Dambreville are joined by Anderson (12.8) and redshirt sophomore Wes Bongiorni. Both Booth and Bongiorni did not see action versus Saint Leo. Dambreville leads the team on the boards with 8.6 rebounds per contest followed by Anderson (5.2) and Booth (5.0). Alexander has a team-best 66 assists on the season for an average of 4.4 per game to rank fifth in the Sunshine State Conference.
  • As a squad, the Mocs rank second in scoring offense and 10th in scoring defense, allowing 81.8 ppg while scoring 88.1 themselves. Booth is fifth in the league in scoring (18.5 ppg) with Dambreville close behind in ninth (17.3). Dambreville sits fourth amongst rebounders with an average of 8.6.
  • Rollins is riding a two-game win streak heading into Saturday's contest. The Tars recently defeated Tampa on the road 71-66 before knocking off Lynn at home 81-72 this past Wednesday. Senior Kyle Marion, playing in his first game since injuring his knee on January 1, led the Tars with 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists in the win over Lynn. Graduate student Hutton Yenor finished with 13 points, while freshman John Latimer III chipped in 12. Redshirt sophomore Jaden Frazier came off the bench, snagging a team-high 14 rebounds and scoring eight points.
  • Yenor leads the Tars averaging 17.9 points per game. He is joined in double-figures by Marion who is tallying 13.5 points per contest. Yenor also leads the team on the glass with 4.8 rebounds per game while Matheus Silveira ranks second with 4.3 boards per contest. Marion is not far behind at 4.2 rpg.
  • As a squad, the Tars rank ninth in scoring offense and seventh in scoring defense in the SSC, allowing 78.9 ppg while scoring 76.3 themselves. Yenor is the lone Tar to rank in the top-five in any individual statistic in the league as he ranks third in the SSC in steals per contest at 2.4.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs and Tars have met 170 times on the hardwood with the Mocs holding a commanding 112-58 lead in the series. The Mocs have won four of the last five meetings between the two programs. Rollins and Florida Southern have gone 3-3 in the last six meetings in Winter Park with the Mocs winning the most recent meeting 81-77 last season. The last Rollins victory in the series came in Lakeland during the 2021-22 season as the Tars defeated Florida Southern 96-77.
