LAKELAND, Fla. - The Florida Southern College men's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday evening as they stepped out of Sunshine State Conference play to host Georgia Southwestern State University.Â
Â
It was a close game between the Moccasins (4-2-5) and Hurricanes (2-5-3) as they combined for 19 shots with 13 coming from FSC, nine being on goal.Â
Â
The game started out with neither team being able to get on the board, as both had four shots, three saves, and five fouls during the first half. It was not until the second half that sophomore midfielder
Dylan Lowther sent a shot right into the hands of GSW's keeper, Juan Ramirez. Ramirez earned the save, but the ball bounced back to the right foot of junior defender
Nyles Lockridge and found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead as the clock stopped at 52:00.Â
Â
FSC was up 1-0 until the equalizer scored by Chris Salamatou, tying the game during the 68th minute of play. With the score tied up at 1-1, FSC knew they had to score, but time was dwindling down as the clock hit 78:51 and junior midfielder
Jay Skelcher-Maxwell sent a shot flying into the back of the net from outside the box to take back the Mocs lead.Â
Â
The game looked like it was going to fall in the Mocs favor until a corner kick from Dante Johnson soared into FSC territory and Chris Salamatou scored for the Hurricanes to tie the game with 24 seconds remaining. That was all the teams could manage as the Mocs earned their fifth draw of the season.Â
Â
In goal,
AJ Pearce tallied four saves as GSW's keeper totaled seven. On the pitch, FSC was led by Skelcher-Maxwell, scoring the go-ahead goal, and two shots on goal. Junior midfielder
Felix Tonne and Male also contributed two shots on goal, followed by Lockridge with his goal.Â
Â
The Mocs jump back into SSC action this weekend as they had to West Palm Beach to take on the Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday evening. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
