LAKELAND, Fla. – Ally Prentice scored two first-half goals as the Florida Southern College women's soccer team shut out Palm Beach Atlantic University 3-0 Saturday night at Berend Field.
The Mocs (7-4-2, 3-2-1 SSC) dominated the offensive front with two goals by Prentice and a third team goal by
Malia Brost to seal the conference win. The Sailfish (1-6-3, 0-5-1 SSC) were stopped to just three shots in the game as they remain winless in conference play.
Florida Southern was quick to score as Prentice scored in the game's first two minutes.
Jasmin Adames assisted on the goal with a pass that Prentice corralled in front of the box and nailed a strong shot that went through the PBA keeper's hands.
Both teams traded shots over the next 10 minutes, including one by
Ori Gotauco that went just wide. FSC's next scoring opportunity was a good attempt by Brost but was deflected out by the keeper. The deflection led to a corner kick, which Brost sent perfectly to a header by Prentice and into the net for her second goal of the night.
While the Mocs continued to put the pressure on the Sailfish, FSC keeper
Jenny Staten saw her second shot of the day halfway through the first half but was able to get the save to keep her clean sheet. FSC had 13 shots in the first half alone and fended off two corner kicks by the Sailfish as the Mocs went into the half with a two-goal lead.
The second half remained in the hands of Florida Southern for its entirety, holding PBA to just one shot in the final 45 minutes. After a few great looks by
Anita Vera, FSC scored its third and final goal after Vera evaded her defender for a through pass to Brost, who took a strong left foot to the back of the net.
Staten ended the game with her solo save off three shots to earn her sixth shutout of the season, equaling her career-high for a single season. The shutout put Staten in the top 10 of NCAA Division II active leaders with her 22
nd career shutout, having set the program record earlier this season. The two goals by Prentice set her season total to four, joining Adames, Brost, and
Sierra Spirk as team leaders for goals.
The Mocs remain at home to host No. 4 Embry-Riddle on Wednesday, Oct. 18, set for a 7 p.m. start at Berend Field.
