DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Florida Southern College men's soccer team traveled to Daytona Beach to take on Embry-Riddle in a Sunshine State Conference battle and came away victorious with a 2-1 win on Wednesday evening.Â
Â
The Moccasins (5-3-5, 3-1-3 SSC) came out strong against the Eagles (3-6-2, 0-6-1 SSC) as freshman forward
George Spencer shot first at the 7:17 mark but was saved by Embry-Riddle's keeper Salvatore della Valle.Â
Â
Quickly after Spencer's shot, junior midfielder
Jay Skelcher-Maxwell found sophomore defender
Ruben Linden, who put FSC on the board first 1-0 in the 13th minute of play. Shortly after, senior forward
Kyle Carr tried to make it 2-0, but the Eagles keeper laid out for his second save of the night.
Â
With the Mocs up 1-0, Embry-Riddle added the pressure on the defense and scored in the 16th minute to tie it up at 1-1. Both teams continued to answer with shots of their own but both the Mocs keeper
AJ Pearce and the Eagles keeper were not letting anything past them.Â
Â
It was in the 79th minute with just over 10 minutes left of action, and Skelcher-Maxwell did it for the second time tonight and found Carr to make it a 2-1 game, giving Florida Southern a one-goal lead.Â
Â
Carr's late strike helped FSC to secure its third win in SSC action.Â
Â
FSC outshot the Eagles 10-to-8, with eight of the Mocs shots on goal and just one for the Eagles. Spencer led FSC with all three of his shots being on goal, followed by Carr with two shots on goal and Linden with one along with freshman midfielder
Matthew Male. Carr scored his third goal of the season, while Linden had his second goal, and Skelcher-Maxwell came away with his third assist of the year.
Â
Florida Southern takes a week off from action and will be back on the road next Wednesday, Oct. 25 as they travel to face the University of Tampa. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
