TAMPA, Fla. - The Florida Southern College men's soccer team jumped back into action after a week off of play, falling against Sunshine State Conference rival University of Tampa with a 2-0 loss on Wednesday evening.
The Moccasins (5-4-5, 3-2-3) and Spartans (3-5-6, 2-4-3) started the match out aggressively, as junior midfielder
Luca Bernoth had the first shot of the game at the 1:19 mark, not letting up the entire first half. The next shot came from freshman midfielder
Matthew Male, going right in the 12th minute before Tampa's offense had a chance. Senior forward
Kyle Carr had the final opportunity of the half coming at 23:37, as Carr's shot went to the top right of the goal to end the first half scoreless.
FSC spent the second half playing defense, as Tampa scored quickly out of the locker room in the 52nd minute as Yannik Pohlmann found the right foot of Marcell Valbuena, sending the ball into the top right corner for a 1-0 advantage. The Mocs continued to play from behind, trying to get a shot on the board, but a strong Spartan defense kept FSC scoreless. Tampa took a 2-0 lead in the 77th minute, which concluded the game as Pohlmann found the foot of Badji Alexandre for his second assist, making it into the back of the net in the top left corner off his right foot.
The Mocs return to Berend Field on Saturday as they host RV Barry University for another SSC matchup. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
