#10 Mocs in 5th After Opening Day of Copperhead Championship

PALM HARBOR, Fla. - Newly ranked no. 10, Florida Southern men's golf opened the Copperhead Championship Monday and the Moccasins finished the first 36 holes in fifth place out of 16 teams, but all 16 registering a vote in the Bushnell/Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll. The Mocs finished the day with a 573 (+6) total with rounds of 291 (+7) and a second round 283 (-1). Max Barile and Adam Alvarez are inside the top-20 to lead the Moccasins on the par-71 7,209-yard Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort. 

Max Barile, a redshirt sophomore from Land O' Lakes, Fla., is tied for ninth at 141 (-1) after climbing 12 spots over the second round to head into the final round Tuesday eyeing another top-10 finish and just five strokes off the leader. Barile used a one-over 72 and a second round 69 (-2) to comprise his two-round total of 141. Adam Alvarez, a redshirt senior from Winter Haven, Fla., is tied for 19th after posting a score of 143 (+1) following a first round even-par 72 and a second round one-over 72. 

Donte Groppuso and Tyler Mistretta are tied for 34th at 146 (+4) as the final score was tallied Monday evening. Groppuso, a junior from Kingston, N.Y., shot up 29 spots in round two thanks to his one-under 70 to finish at four-over for the day; Groppuso carded a 76 (+5) to open the day. Mistretta, a redshirt sophomore from North Palm Beach, Fla., climbed 10 spots to sit in 34th after a second round one-over 72 paired with his first round 74 (+3). 

Freddie Parlby, a sophomore from Sheffield, England playing as an individual, is in 58th place at 150 (+8) after rounds of 73 (+2) and 77 (+6). Clay Tucker, a junior from Jacksonville, Fla., is in 81st place at 155 (+13) and looks to Tuesday to climb the leaderboard with one final round of 18. 

The Mocs together had 110 pars and 28 birdies as Barile paced the team with 25 pars, one ahead of Groppuso and Alvarez, with Mistretta edging Barile and Alvarez for the team lead in birdies 7-to-6. 

No. 9 Lee University is leading the team race by two strokes over No. 8 West Florida at 564. (-4). The Flames' Oliver Lewis-Perkins is holding onto a two-stroke lead for the individual title at 136 (-6). 

The 16 team field returns to action Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. to close out the Copperhead Championship.
