MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Florida Southern College men's cross country team saw five members honored by the Sunshine State Conference Tuesday afternoon as the league office announced its annual all-conference team selections. Senior
Owen Allen along with sophomores
Anthony Matthew,
Christian Giller and
Chris Colavita were all named First Team All-SSC while graduate student
Alex Guy earned Second Team All-SSC accolades.
The five all-conference selections are the most for the Moccasins since 2006 when they had six selections including four first team and two second team. The four first team selections mark the most for FSC since 2016 when the Mocs had four honorees as well.
The Moccasins captured the 2023 Sunshine State Conference Championship this past weekend, dethroning the four-time defending champions Embry-Riddle in the process. The Mocs placed all five of their scoring runners in the top-eight with the top-seven finishers earning all-SSC honors.
League coaches voted for Runner, Freshman, and Coach of the Year awards, while runners who finished Top-14 at the 2023 SSC Men's Cross Country Championship earned All-SSC status.
Allen earns his first career all-conference accolades after taking sixth at this year's SSC Championship at Holloway Park. The senior completed the 8K course in 25:13.2. The Key West, Fla. native competed in three regular season meets for the Mocs where he took 46
th at the Mountain Dew Invitational, 11
th at the FSU Invite and 35
th at the UAH Chargers Invitational. The senior has overcome several injuries throughout his career and was named the 2022-23 Florida Southern College Male Comeback Athlete of the Year following last season's performance.
Matthew, the 2022 Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year, earns his second career All-SSC honors after being named Second Team All-SSC last season. The Stuart, Fla. native led the Mocs at the 2023 SSC Championship as he placed third overall after completing the course in 24:59.6. The sophomore competed in four regular season meets for the Mocs where he took 11
th at the Mocs XC Kick-off followed by a 60
th place showing at the Mountain Dew Invitational. Matthew took 77
th at the FSU Invite before posting a personal best at the UAH Chargers Invitational and placing 18
th overall. Matthew is on pace to become the eighth Florida Southern men's cross country runner to be named All-SSC four times.
Giller finished just behind Matthew at the 2023 SSC Championship as he took fourth overall while crossing the finish line in 25:02.9. The Brandon, Fla. native competed in four regular season races for the Mocs as he placed fourth overall at the Mocs XC Kick-off to open the season before taking 33
rd at the Mountain Dew Invitational. He earned another top-10 finish at the FSU Invitational where he took 10
th overall before posting a personal best in the 8K at the UAH Chargers XC Invitational while placing 19
th overall.
Colavita earns his first all-conference honors after taking seventh at the 2023 SSC Championship with a mark of 25:16.4. The sophomore competed in four regular season meets for the Mocs as he opened the season with a fifth-place finish at the Mocs XC Kick-off followed by a 28
th place showing at the Mountain Dew Invitational. In his next race he took 30
th at the FSU Invitational followed by a personal best in the 8K at the UAH Chargers Invitational where he placed 49
th overall. This is the first all-conference accolades for the Washington Township, N.J. native.
Guy rounds out the list of FSC honorees as he earned his first all-conference accolades in his final season with the Moccasins. The graduate student took home 2022 USTFCCCA All-South Region honors for his performance at the 2022 NCAA South Region Championship last season but this marks his first all-conference nod. The Keystone Heights, Fla. native has been a leader in the program for the last several seasons and caps off his conference career with Second Team All-SSC honors after taking eighth at the 2023 SSC Championship this past weekend. He completed the 8K course in 25:19.6 while finishing eighth overall, one spot shy of first team honors. He competed in four regular season meets for the Mocs and opened the season with a third-place finish at the Mocs XC Kick-off followed by a 44
th place showing at the Mountain Dew Invitational. He earned a top-20 finish at the FSU Invitational as he took 20
th overall followed by a 38
th place finish at the UAH Chargers Invitational.
Tanner Rosolino of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University collected Runner of the Year accolades while Nick Scarangelli, also out of Embry-Riddle, earned Freshman of the Year honors. Embry-Riddle's head coach Mike Rosolino took home Coach of the Year honors for the fourth-straight season.
Allen, Matthew, Giller, Colavita, Guy and the rest of the Mocs have begun preparation for the 2023 NCAA South Region Championship which will be held in Montevallo, Ala. on Saturday, Nov. 4.
