Moccasins Sweep Barry on Dig for Diabetes Night

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College volleyball team promoted a cause that hits home with the team while also dismantling the visiting Buccaneers of Barry University Friday night. The Moccasins used Friday night's match to raise both money and awareness for type 1 diabetes which effects three members of the FSC program including head coach Ashlee Crowder, senior Mackenzie Petermann and junior Megan Carron. FSC came out strong and the Mocs posted their eighth 3-0 sweep of the season.

The victory pushes Florida Southern's record to 14-7 on the year including 7-5 in Sunshine State Conference play while the Buccaneers fell to 8-13 overall and 2-10 in league action.
 
Petermann led the Mocs in the match as she tallied a match-high 12 kills while digging up a team-high 13 balls for her 27th career double-double. The senior had just two hitting errors to finish with a .370 hitting percentage, fourth-best percentage this season. Graduate student Elena Djokovic also had a solid hitting night as she opened the match with kills on seven of her first eight swings. She finished with just one hitting error and 10 kills while posting a .391 hitting percentage, her second-best percentage when reaching double-digit kills this season. The Belgrade, Serbia native also tallied 10 digs for her sixth double-double of the season.
 
Junior Zoe Lowe chipped in nine kills and three blocks while classmate Madison Fowler added eight kills and a team-high seven blocks including three solo stops. Graduate student Jana Gilic saw her first action since early September after recovering from an injury and tallied four kills and three blocks including one solo.
 
Setters Mary Kate Mulvaney and Kiersten Kraus each dished out 18 assists in the victory. Mulvaney added a kill and three digs to her total while Kraus posted four kills, 11 digs and two blocks. The double-double marked her 14th of the season. Senior libero Caroline Chambers chipped in 11 digs and five assists.
 
The Mocs held Barry to a .063 hitting percentage for the match while posting a .297 mark of their own. FSC dominated in blocking with 11 blocks compared to Barry's five.
 
FSC opened the match with a quick 5-1 run but the Buccaneers responded with a 7-1 clip of their own to take their first lead of the night at 8-6. After trading the next two points, the Mocs opened up their own 7-1 run to take their second four-point lead of the night at 14-10. The Mocs would not relinquish the lead the rest of the set and eventually ended the period with another 7-1 run taking a 25-18 victory.
 
After Barry scored the first point of the second set, the Mocs went on a 5-1 run to take the lead and once again they would not relinquish it. FSC steadily pulled away throughout the second stanza eventually closing the set on a Kraus kill, 25-16.
 
The third set was back-and-forth early on but leading 13-12, the Mocs began a 9-2 run which opened up a eight-point advantage for FSC at 22-14. After trading the next two points, the Buccaneers began a run of their own and eventually scored four-straight points to cut the deficit to just four at 23-19. A bad set by Barry ended the spurt and a Fowler kill closed out the match for the Mocs 25-19.
 
Florida Southern will be back in action tomorrow, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m. as the Mocs host the Lynn Fighting Knights in a pivotal Sunshine State Conference and South Region match-up.
