SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Florida Southern College men's tennis finished its fall tournament schedule competing in the Saint Leo Lion Invitational this past weekend.
The Mocs competed against three other programs during the annual Saint Leo Hidden Duals with several great performances in the final competition before the spring NCAA season. Over three days of competition,
Gabriel Jornert led the Mocs with a 2-0 record with an overall 17-19 record as a team.
"It was a great gauge for our guys to play some of the top teams in the nation, including top-five rivals Flagler and Saint Leo," said head coach
Rhett Rollyson. "The face we basically played even with them is a great sign that the Mocs are on the rise. We have many things to improve upon but I'm excited to battle with my guys in the spring."
In doubles, Jornert and
Bosko Boskovic won the first day as did
Hunter Nussbaum and
Edoardo Melindo. Overall, the Mocs went 6-6 in doubles with 2-0 individual records for Boskovic, Jornert,
Ryan Rajakar, Nussbaum, and Melindo.
In singles, Jornert went 2-0 on the weekend and a 2-1 record for
Chris Fok Kow and
Mario Garoz, with their losses both in the match tiebreaker. Melindo and Nussbaum also went undefeated with wins by
Elliott Altman and Boskovic on the weekend.
"The fact we went 11-13 in 24 individual matches against top-five teams is extremely promising," said Rollyson. "Eight of the 16 matches went to match tiebreaks, which hopefully shows we are making strides of closing the gap to get to that level."
Florida Southern will open the spring 2023 season in February with a schedule release coming soon.
