LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College men's swimming team opened the 2023-24 season with a commanding win over Florida Tech Saturday afternoon at the Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center Pool.
The Mocs had nine event wins and opened with a relay win to beat the Panthers 159-103.
Brandon Wilson (100 back – 51.65 & 200 back – 1:51.69) and
Kyle Micallef (50 free – 19.96 & 100 free – 45.09) led the Mocs with two individual event wins each. Freshman
Peter Csicsaky also had two individual event wins in his Moccasin debut, winning the 500 (4:39.89) and 1000 (9:41.22) free events.
The meet's opening event was the 400 medley relay, in which a Moccasin crew of Wilson,
Nicko Peristeridis, Nino Viallon, and Micallef won the event in 3:20.59. Joining Csicsaky on the podium in the 1000 free was teammates
Thomas Wooldridge (9:42.44) and
Clyde Crouse (9:57.74) for a podium sweep. All three finished in the same order for the 500 free with Wooldridge in 4:42.50 and Crouse in 4:47.34.
In his FSC debut,
John Zeiger won the 200 free in 1:40.84 with
Niko Frese finishing third in 1:48.21. Viallon joined Wilson in the backstroke and finished second in the 100 back (52.35). In the breaststroke events, Peristeridis finished first in the 200 with a time of 2:06.99, and
Travis Oleson in third with 2:09.37. In the 100 breast, Oleson finished second in 57.79 and Peristeridis third in 58.45.
Viallon got his first event win of the season with a 49.49 time in the 100 fly and
Cameron Lai-Harris was right behind in 50.73 for third. In the 200 fly,
Tristan Clanton finished second with 1:55.47 and
Walter Christman in third with 1:58.34.
The Mocs will travel to Fort Lauderdale next weekend to compete in the Shark Invitational Oct. 13-14, hosted by Nova Southeastern.
