Mocs Minutes: Basketballs Host Embry-Riddle to Highlight Weekend

  • Florida Southern men's and women's track both closes out their inaugural indoor season and opens up the 2023 outdoor campaign this weekend. The Mocs first close out the indoor season at the Florida Last Chance meet in Gainesville, Fla. before opening up the outdoor season Saturday night at the Tampa Track Classic.
  • The Florida Southern men will send entrants into three events at the Florida Last Chance before competing in five events at the Tampa Track Classic on Saturday. FSC will send 12 runners to compete in the 800m on Thursday while David Pautienus will be the lone Moc competing in the 3,000m. FSC will send three relay squads into the 4x400m event to close out the indoor season.
  • The outdoor debut will see newcomer Luke Reeves competing in the 400m while a pair of Mocs will see action in the 800m. Three members of the squad will tackle the 1500m while the highlight may come at the 3000m as Owen Allen attempts to put together a personal best which could contend for the school record in the event. Allen will be joined by nine other Mocs who will help push him to the mark. The final event of the meet will be the 4x400m which has yet to be determined on who will be competing.
  • The Florida Southern women will see action in two events on Thursday including the 800m and the 3,000m before taking on three events at the Tampa Track Classic on Saturday. FSC will take on the 1500m, 3,000m and 4x400m relay.
  • A total of 12 Moccasins will travel up for the women's team to Gainesville with eight seeing action in the 800m and four in the 3000m. Emma Mussante will lead the 3K group while the 800m squad will be pushing each other to post a strong mark on the final indoor day of the season. On Saturday, junior Ellie Fluman will take on the 3000m after pacing the race on Thursday. She will be joined by five others as they look to open the outdoor season on a strong foot. Mussante will transition to the 1500m on Saturday and will lead a group of six Mocs in the event. Sophie Barth, Caitlin Beery, Rachel Hockenberry and Jinia Johnson are scheduled to team up for the 4x400m relay.

  • Florida Southern will head to Georgia once again for a weekend series against the Bobcats. FSC is seeking its second winning series in a row after a 2-1 series win against North Georgia last weekend. The Mocs won 9-6 in game one against the Nighthawks after a big sixth inning to score five runs and fend off a late surge by UNG. Game two, FSC had two solo homers, one by Bryce Safferwich and another by Mitch Donofrio, but Nighthawks took revenge with a 10-2 Moccasin loss. Game three went to the Mocs after being behind for most of the game until a two-RBI single by Drew Cavanaugh gave Mocs the lead in the 7-6 series decider.
  • Mocs won their first SSC Player of the Week award with Cavanaugh named to the honor on Monday after his four-for-10 outing where he had two home runs over three games. He was walked four times in two games with a great job by the transfer catcher. FSC has improved in its batting, with a .256 average over the seven games and a league-high 11 home runs. Safferwich continues to shine with a .476 average in his five appearances with D'Ante Starks batting .333. Safferwich, Rohsean Riley, and Cavanaugh each have two homers on the season with team leader Donofrio with three.
  • Despite a 5.00 ERA as a team, Mocs have had great pitching from preseason All-American Nathan Madej with 12 strikeouts, including seven in his most recent start and .171 opposing batting average. Aric McAtee leads the team with 14 strikeouts in his two starts. Collin Camarigg went four innings in the game three win against North Georgia. Camarigg was credited with the win after allowing only one hit, no runs, and seven strikeouts in his 13 batters.
  • Georgia College opened its season with a 4-2 win over Emmanuel but lost the next three straight against No. 7 Tampa. The Bobcats had their series against Eckerd canceled due to the weather last week. Despite the losses against the Spartans, Georgia College had the last two games go to extra innings, including a solo homer in the top of the ninth by the Bobcats to tie game two of the series. Tampa won in the 11th of that game and the Spartans staged tying runs in the bottom of the ninth to send into extras before Cumbo hit a walk off two-run homer in the 10th.
  • Bobcats are led by Tuten with a .389 batting average and Chester at .300. Tuten has two homers on the season and three RBI on the season in a low scoring first few games. As a team, Bobcats are batting .191 compared to .248 for their opponents and GC has used several reliving pitchers so far with Jacob Ryan going seven innings so far with no runs.
  • HISTORY: Mocs will take on the Bobcats for the first time in nearly 20 years with the last appearance a 2-1 loss in 2004. FSC won the previous two matchups with a combined score of 44-5. This will be the first game at Georgia College with two neutral site games and a home game against GC in 1995 in Lakeland.

  • Florida Southern is hitting the road for the second time this season but the Mocs are competing against its first Sunshine State Conference opponent in Barry. FSC opened up the season 3-3 going 1-3 at the Captain D's Surf 'N Turf Classic hosted by No. 5 North Georgia.
  • Despite opening up with a historic year so far defeating Ursuline in the home opener. With a 2-0 start FSC headed north to compete in the freezing cold tundra of North Georgia. There the Mocs faced No. 5 North Georgia falling to the Nighthawks in the final innings of both contests. Florida Southern also faced King University earning a split between the tornados. The win against King was led by senior Kelsey Peck hitting her fourth homer of the year while going 2-for-3 from the plate with a run scored and two RBIs. In the circle, junior Mel Rogers collected her second win pitching six and ? innings striking out three batters.
  • Senior Jessica Bryson is leading the Mocs from the plate with a .571 batting average going 8-for-14, four runs, two RBIs, and a double. Behind Bryson is junior transfer Taylor Thomas, batting a .533, going 8-for-15 from the plate, with two runs, four RBIs, and a double. Peck who is having her best year is batting a .350 going 7-for-20 from the leadoff spot. The Lakeland native has four homers, 10 RBIs, six runs, and a double in six games. Rogers is leading FSC from the circle with two wins and one loss and a 1.10 ERA appearing in four games. The right-handed pitcher has 17 strikeouts on the season, allowing six runs, only two being earned. Junior transfer, Ashley Blessin is 1-1 on the season striking out 12 batters.
  • Barry has played the most games in the SSC owning a 9-4 overall record opening up the SSC portion this weekend against FSC. To open the 2023 season the Buccaneers opened up the season with a sweep against West Florida winning both games in shutout fashion. The later loss to No. 23 Alabama-Huntsville before going on a 7-2 run last splitting with Flagler on Wednesday, its first games on the road.
  • Rylee Lord homered for the second time in 2023. Maci Barnhart earns her second save of 2023. Cassandra Lee's first extra-base hit for the Buccaneers (double in 5th of Game Two) drove in two runs. Lee raises pitching record to 5-0; keeps ERA under 1.00 (0.49).
  • Barry is led by Cassandra Lee batting a .357 appearing in every single game going 10-for-24 from the plate with seven runs and six RBIs. Behind Lee is Taylor Thompson batting a .351 leading the Bucs in hits with 13. Thompson is just one of three with home runs on the season, also bringing in six runners, and hitting three triples.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern and Barry are meeting for the 135th time since 1987. The Mocs were swept last year against the Bucs also opening up the SSC portion of the schedule. Despite the losses the Mocs own the most wins over the Bucs with 70 wins.

  • No. 24 Florida Southern will travel to Lynn in another top 10 matchup after a 6-1 loss to No. 1 Barry in the season dual meet opener last week. Mocs had a successful FSC Invite two weeks ago and took on the Buccaneers in its first meet. Isabella Bolivar was the only point for the Mocs after she won her first set and rallied for a third-set tiebreaker win. Despite a close first set against No. 21 Farfan, Olivia Bryant nearly won her first set and eventually lost her second set. Although an early loss, Mocs will look to rebound against a very good Lynn team and return home to host Bates on Monday.
  • No. 6 Lynn has split its first matches with a 4-3 win over NAIA No. 2 Keiser to open the season and a 4-3 loss against No. 2 Nova Southeastern last week. Fighting Knights lost the doubles point but managed to secure three singles wins. T
  • HISTORY: Mocs are looking for their first win against the Fighting Knights in the 39-match history. FSC has shown improvement against Lynn with points scored in the last two matches, most recently a 5-2 loss last season. Two flights went to a third set, winning only one in the loss. LU won the #1, 3, and #6 courts in a top 10 battle.
  • Bates will travel to Lakeland in its season opener with several veterans and returning members of the Bobcats squad. Assistant coach for the Bobcats is FSC alum Magda Stepnik in a return to Lakeland. She was a four-year letter winner and ITA Scholar-Athlete for all four years
  • HISTORY: Mocs have faced the Bobcats once in its history, with last year a 6-1 win at home. With two top 10 matches in a row, Mocs will take on Bates for a home match before again taking on top 25 teams.

  • Florida Southern will look to notch its first conference win of the season after dropping the last two against No. 12 Lynn and No. 1 Barry last week. Despite the two losses, Mocs had a great showing, including Matteo Feggi named the SSC Athlete of the Week, for the consecutive week FSC earned the honors after Chris Fok Kow received the honor the week before. Mocs won the doubles point against Lynn but was unable to keep the momentum as Lynn won the next four singles courts and the match win. In a thrilling match against Barry, FSC nearly took down the defending champions with three singles court flights going to a third set, each of win the Mocs won.
  • Eckerd hosts FSC in its season opener with four newcomers and four returners for the Tritons. EC returns Christian Kearns, Sam Walker, Arik Suez, and Eric Asakura, each with experience in last season's squad and the latter two in doubles competition. Newcomers include three freshmen and a sophomore transfer from Merrimack College.
  • HISTORY: Mocs have held the upper hand in matchups against the Tritons, winning the last 18 matches in a row. Holding a strong away record, Mocs will look to get back in the win column in the first road match of the season.
  • Bates travels to Lakeland for its spring 2023 season opener and a full roster. Assistant coach for the Bobcats is FSC alum Magda Stepnik in a return to Lakeland. She was a four-year letter winner and ITA Scholar-Athlete for all four years.
  • HISTORY: Mocs have taken on Bates on three occasions, winning all three. Last season, Mocs won 7-0, and a 2020 6-1 win. With doubles points acting as three full points, Mocs won 7-2 in 2004.

  • Florida Southern is coming off a 65-44 loss on the road at Tampa. Sophomore Arielle Dabu scored 11 points in the loss.
  • Freshman Sydney Gomes was second for the Mocs in scoring behind Dabu with 10 points. Redshirt senior Ashley Shell scored 8, and freshman Amari Jackson scored 7 points. Shell leads the Mocs in points per game and rebounds at 14.1 and 6.6 per game. Senior Domenica Zamora and Dabu are also averaging double digits at 12.0 and 10.5 points per contest respectively.
  • As a squad, Florida Southern ranks 6th in the conference in points per game at 68.7 points, and is 9th in points allowed at 66.3.
  • Embry-Riddle is currently on a three game winning streak leading the SSC sitting in eighth place. The most recent win for the Eagles was Wednesday night defeating Florida Tech 75-63 at home.
  • As a team, the Eagles are averaging 62.8 points per game while their opponent is averaging 65.4 points per game. The defensive end Embry-Riddle is coming away with 33.2 boards per game, 7.2 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game.
  • Against Florida Tech Keturah Balabyekkubo matched her career high with 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to record her third double-double of the year. Sydney Jones, who was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line, matched her season-best 14 points and equaled Balabyekkubo's efforts on the boards for her first double-double of the season. Madyson Jean-Louis and Jenna Teterycz added 11 points each.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern holds the all-time series lead over Embry-Riddle 11-4. The Mocs won the last meeting between the two teams on January 7, 2023, 72-67.

  • Florida Southern is coming off a 91-84 win at Tampa. Redshirt sophomore Jadin Booth scored 37 points in 37 minutes of action while shooting 11 for 11 from the free throw line.
  • Redshirt sophomore Dominick Denny tallied 16 points, redshirt senior EJ Dambreville scored 14 points, and redshirt sophomore Wes Bongiorni scored 10 points to round out the Mocs players who finished in double figures. Booth leads the Mocs and ranks first in the conference in points per game at 21.1. Dambreville ranks 8th in the conference in scoring at 17.9 points per contest, while redshirt sophomore Luke Anderson averages 14.7 points per game to round out Mocs players averaging double figures.
  • As a squad, Florida Southern averages 92.82points per game, which is 2nd in the league behind Nova Southeastern, and ranks 10th in points allowed at 84.5
  • Embry-Riddle defeated Florida Tech down the stretch Wednesday night, 81-78, to move to 17-7, 10-7 on the year. The Eagles's Chris Murray led the way with 17 points while Malcolm Whitlow finished just behind at 15 points. Wesley Simpson tallied 12 points and Dru Nickson added 10 points. Murray finished the game with a double-double with 14 rebounds, and just shy of a triple-double with seven assists.
  • Malcolm Whitlow continues to pace the team on the year with 18.3 points per game while Michael McClaister is the leader in rebounding with 181 on the season, 8.2 per game.
  • As a team, ERAU averages 81.1 points a game and holds opponents to 72.9 ppg, for an 8.2 margin. The Eagles shoot 46.2-percent from the field and 33.3-percent from beyond the arc, while sitting at 71.1-percent from the free throw line. Embry-Riddle is fifth in the league in scoring and second in scoring defense.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern holds the all-time series lead over Embry-Riddle 11-7. In games played in Lakeland, the Mocs are 7-2 and have won six straight in the George W. Jenkins Field House. The Eagles won the last meeting in Daytona Beach on January 7, 2023, 106-95. Jadin Booth led the Mocs with 28 points while Chris Murray finished as the overall leader in scoring with 31.
