SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Florida Southern College baseball fell to Saint Leo University in the series finale Sunday afternoon in a 7-6 extra innings loss at the Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
The Mocs (18-9, 5-4 SSC) tied the game in the top of the ninth but were unable to score in extras for the conference loss. The Lions (15-12, 6-6 SSC) hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11
th for the game-three win. Florida Southern won the series after victories in the first two games.
Florida Southern was first to score in game three with two hits leading to a 2 RBI double by
Bryce Safferwich in the first. A pitching duel took over for the next three innings with
Jordan Fox on the Mocs tallying four strikeouts in that stretch and a 2-0 Moccasin lead.
A big fourth inning on both sides quickly evened the game despite three runs by the Mocs in the top half of the inning. FSC knocked three hits in the fourth and an RBI double by
Rohsean Riley for the first run.
Jevin Relaford continued his hot bat against SLU with a two-run homer for a 5-0 FSC lead. Saint Leo was quick to respond with a three-run homer and RBI single for a 5-4 score through four innings.
Saint Leo took the lead for the first time in the game in the bottom of the eighth with a couple of wild pitches and an RBI single for a 6-5 SLU lead. Mocs tied the game in the top half from an RBI single up the middle by
D'Ante Starks to send
Ahmad Fitts home, while
Collin Camarigg kept the game even for extra innings.
Neither team managed to score in the 10
th but it was Saint Leo in the 11
th with a fielding error and a couple of stolen bases that set up an RBI single to walk off for the Lions.
Justin Stewart was handed the loss with a total of 11 hits for Florida Southern, including six doubles in the game.
The Mocs will take on No. 21 Rollins College in a midweek matchup on Tuesday, March 28, set for a 5 p.m. start at the Alfond Stadium at Harper-Shepherd Field in Winter Park.
