Mocs Minutes: Baseball and Women's Lacrosse Host While Track, Softball and Men's Lacrosse Hit the Road

  • Florida Southern will host Embry-Riddle for GMF Steel Night at Henley after spending the last two weeks on the road. Last time out, the Mocs had a big 11-5 midweek win over Florida Tech. Jeff Liquori had a home run in the game as four Moccasins had two hits each. Mocs capitalized on three errors by the Panthers throughout the game and scored 10 unanswered runs before the Panthers attempted a late rally. The midweek game counted as non-conference but a critical regional matchup as the season inches closer to an end.
  • Mocs continue to bat well with a .315 average. Led by Bryce Safferwich with a .404 average and 63 hits. Both Connor Berry and Drew Cavanaugh have 11 homers on the season as five of the top 10 leaders in home runs come from Florida Southern. Mocs have 69 total homers on the year, seventh in the NCAA, with a 1.82 average per game, good for fifth in the nation. Safferwich has 1.80 hits per game average for a top-10 marker in Division II.
  • On the mound, the Mocs are led in strikeouts by Nathan Madej with 74, who only need 13 more to reach 200 on his career. Among starters, Aric McAtee has a 3.20 ERA and Collin Camarigg has a league-high seven saves on the season, with one save needed to enter the top 10 in program history for saves in a single season and career saves. As a team, the Mocs have a 4.94 ERA with key appearances by relievers Kerry Wright, Justin Wit, and Andrew Williamson.
  • Embry-Riddle will travel to Lakeland after a losing series against Palm Beach Atlantic last week. The Eagles lost the first game 9-7 in an extra inning battle as the Sailfish hit a walk-off two-run homer to win the game. ERAU recovered for a 4-1 win in game two on Saturday, including two consolation runs in the top of the ninth to seal the win. A heartbreaker third game for Embry-Riddle as the Eagles made it a 6-3 game into the bottom of the ninth as PBA scored to make it a 4-6 game and a grand slam by Housen won the game for the Sailfish and the series win.
  • As a team, the Eagles are batting .264 at the plate (a conference low), with AJ Marinello a .377 batter and Dylan Brazil and Garrett Bogart both above .300. Camden Traficante leads the team with four homers and Timo Aracena has a team-high 20 RBI. From the mound, the Eagles have a 5.03 ERA and have only given up a conference-best 21 home runs. Opposing batters have a .289 average and starter Tyler Stufano leads with a 4.09 ERA and five wins. Dillon Moran, Conner Dunnam, and Gunnar Harrison also alternate starting duties.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs have a 17-7 overall record against the Eagles, with a winning series last season. Mocs won the first two games, with a 4-3 loss to prevent the Moccasin sweep. Mocs are 7-3 in the last 10 matchups with an average runs of 8.88.

  • Florida Southern is coming off a 3-2 week sweeping Flagler during the mid-week game 6-3 and 9-6. In Sunshine State Conference action the Mocs fell to the Nova Southeastern Sharks 2-1 taking game one of the doubleheader in shutout fashion 2-0, but fell in the series opener and final game 9-2 and 6-4. Several Mocs had big games as FSC hit five homers last week two from senior Kelsey Peck, and one from junior's Kiki Morris, Taylor Thomas, and Skyler Ralstin.
  • In the SSC, is sitting in eighth place ahead of Lynn, Palm Beach Atlantic, and Eckerd who is on a nine game losing streak. Batting the Mocs are sixth with a .295 average with 240 hits on the season. FSC is in a three way tie for most doubles (49), seven triples, and 15 homers to sit third in home runs on the season, while bringing in 163 runners.
  • Destiny Colgate is leading the way for Florida Southern from the plate with a .394 batting average. The catcher is 39-for-99 with 16 runs, six doubles, and 20 RBIs. Third baseman Thomas is supporting a .386 batting average overall to put her and Colgate in the top 10 of the conference. Thomas is 49-for-127 with 11 doubles, 31 RBIs, and two homers being just one of two Mocs to start in every single game this season. Ralstin batting a .385 just behind Thomas to sit 11th in the conference with 45 hits, six doubles, and 24 RBIs. Morris improved to a .360 average from the plate followed by Peck (.315) to finish the Mocs 300 batting averages. Morris has six doubles, one triple on the season with 17 RBIS in 40 hits. Peck is leading FSC with nine home runs, going 40-for-127 from the plate with eight doubles, one triple, bringing in 24 runners. In the circle for the Mocs, Mel Rogers is leading the way with a 2.96 ERA followed by Ashley Blessin with a 4.51 ERA starting in 18 games with 12 complete games striking out 55 batters. Rogers is 9-3 on the season with 21 appearances, nine complete games and 45 batters sent back to the dugout with strikeouts.
  • Embry-Riddle is sitting sixth in the conference and is currently on a one game winning streak after falling in the first two games against Palm Beach Atlantic 2-1 and 9-5 before winning the final game of the series 2-1. On the season, the Eagles are sitting just behind FSC in seventh with a .278 batting average with 312 hits, 47 doubles, nine triples, and just eight homers.
  • Delaney Morgan is leading the way for Embry-Riddle with a .352 batting average. She is just one of two Eagles with two homers along with Karina Ortiz-Munoz the only Embry-Riddle player with more than one homer. Mahaliyah Sandridge is right behind Morgan in hitting with a .346 batting average. Sandridge is leading the Eagles with 17 doubles, three triples and 47 hits. Closing out the 300 batting is Mia Macchia with a .342 average going 40-for-117 from the plate, with 16 runs, three doubles, and 11 runners batted in. In the circle, Mallory Kinahan owns a 1.54 ERA and is 14-7 on the year pitching 12 complete games with three shutouts, and 62 strikeouts.
  • HISTORY: This will only be the 16th meeting between the two teams as Florida Southern has only one two and are currently on a four game losing streak against the Eagles. The last win was in 2019 as FSC defeated Embry-Riddle 9-8 on Chris Bellotto Field.

  • The Florida Southern men's and women's track teams will head to Atlanta, Ga. Friday night for the Georgia Tech Invite. This will mark the Moccasins first appearance at the meet since 2016. FSC was scheduled to attend the 2020 Georgia Tech Invite but the season was cut short due to COVID-19.
  • The Florida Southern women will send 10 student-athletes to Georgia to compete in a total of three events. A pair with compete in the 1500m led by junior Jinia Johnson while seven will compete in the 5000m. Junior Ellie Fluman and sophomore Emma Mussante will lead the 5K group while the remaining Moccasin junior Carolina Titus will take on the 3000m steeplechase looking to improve on her school record time in the event which she set last season.
  • The Florida Southern men will be sending seven runners to the meet on Friday who will compete in the same three events as the women. Senior Alex Guy will represent the Mocs in the 1500m while freshman Caleb Brady will take on the 3000m steeplechase once again. A group of five Mocs will compete in the 5000m with juniors Owen Allen and Bryson Yamnitz being joined in the event by a trio of freshmen.

  • No. 5 Florida Southern hosts Palm Beach Atlantic in the regular season finale after defeating Florida Tech on the road 20-11. In the win, Jackie Stoller led the 13 Moccasins in scoring with a hattrick while five different players scored two goals; Olivia Manghisi, Madison Tare, Giana Murphy, Maria Reeves, and Hailey Daleo. Sydney O'Neill earned the win playing the opening 30 minutes tallying four saves while Rylie Rittberg made an appearance and finished with five saves in the final 30 minutes of action.
  • On the year, Stoller leads the team in points (81), goals (50), and assists (31), and recently earned her first Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week honor this week. Daleo and Tare are tied for second on the team in points with 52 while they each have 46 and 41 goals, respectively.
  • As a team, the Mocs average 18.13 goals per game and hold opponents to 12.06. Rittberg holds the team lead in goal for minutes played (519:18), saves (54) and record (8-1) while O'Neill stands at 312:06 minutes played with 38 saves and a 4-1 record.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic has dropped its last six games all to SSC foes including the last 19-2 game at No. 16 Lynn. In the loss, Olivia Larges and Katie Karlsen tallied the lone two goals for the Sailfish while Katie Avena had the lone assist. A pair of Sailfish played in goal combining for 10 saves led by Georgia Karns with six and Courtney Rausch with four.
  • Larges and Ella Howlin lead the team in points (28) while the duo is first and second on the team, respectively, in goals with 26 and 21.
  • PBA averages 7.07 goals per game and gives up 16.36 to its opponents. Rausch has played the most minutes in goal with a 2-10 record making 61 saves in 510:22 minutes. Karns has played in 333 minutes with 40 saves and a 1-1 record.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern is 4-0 all-time against Palm Beach Atlantic winning the last matchup 22-3 on April 23, 2022 in West Palm Beach. Three players for the Mocs scored three goals a year ago in Abby McFerren, Ellie Griffin, and Tare. Hannah Hale tied for the team lead in points with McFerren with four total points.

  • No. 16 Florida Southern closes out the regular season Saturday at Palm Beach Atlantic. A win versus the Sailfish would give FSC 12 wins on the season and tie the program record for most wins in a season. The Mocs will enter the 2023 Sunshine State Conference Championship as the No. 3 seed and will travel to the No. 2 seed Tampa on Thursday April 27.
  • As a team, the Moccasins rank high in several statistical categories within NCAA Division II. FSC leads the country in caused turnovers per contest (14.53), total points (427) and scoring offense (18.33). The Mocs also rank second in the nation in total assists (152) and total ground balls (637) while ranking inside the top ten in ground balls per game (3rd, 42.47), points per game (3rd, 28.47), opponent clear percentage (4th, 0.728), scoring margin (5th, +8.53), assists per game (9th, 10.13) and clearing percentage (9th, 0.889). Senior Nick Shannon ranks third in NCAA Division II in caused turnovers per contest (3.00) while junior goalkeeper Michael Simone ranks 14th in the country in goals against average (9.37).
  • Senior Sean Nolan leads the offensive attack for the Mocs as he ranks third in the Sunshine State Conference in points per game (4.33) while ranking third in assists per contest (1.60) and sixth in goals per contest (2.73). Sophomore Matt Flammenspeck leads the team in goals with 44 this season while ranking fourth in the SSC in goals per game (2.93). Eight others have produced double-digit tallies this season including freshman Nolan Tighe (37), graduate student Jay Minor (25), junior Brendan Glasser (21), graduate student Andrew Medeiros (18), sophomore Brydon Robichaud (14), junior Kaleb Cook (11), sophomore Owen McCusker (10) and senior Lucas Sommers (10). Nolan leads the team with 24 assists while Medeiros sits in second with 23. Minor is not far behind in third with 22. At the face off, it has been freshman Jacob Czyz handling most of duties this season as he has gone 165-of-300 (.550) while fellow freshman Luke Henricksen has taken over the starting spot in the last two games due to injury and has gone 67-of-151 this season (.444) including 14-of-31 (.451) versus Florida Tech in the most recent contest. Czyz also leads the team in ground balls this season with 97 (7.5 per contest).
  • Defensively, senior Nick Shannon has caused a team -best 45 turnovers this season while scooping up 56 ground balls to rank second on the squad. Senior Zac Fitzgerald rans second on the squad with 20 caused turnovers this season while graduate student Craig Connor sits in third with 19. Five goalkeepers have seen action for the Mocs this season with junior Michael Simone seeing the majority of the action. Simone has started the last 11 contests and has a 9-2 record with a 9.37 goals against average in 601-plus minutes of action. He has 108 saves and has seen action in 14 of the 15 contests this season.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic has lost six-straight heading into Saturday's contest. The last Sailfish victory came on March 17 versus Quincy.
  • Sophomore Caleb Southard leads the PBA offense with 27 total points including 13 goals and a team-best 14 assists. Senior Henry Sloyan is the top-goal scorer for the Sailfish with 19 through 11 games this season. Junior Dylan Insolia is second on the team with 14 goals followed by Southard and graduate student Neil Calkin who are tied for third on the team with 13 goals. Southard is the lone Sailfish with double-digit assists while junior Hunter Lizza sits in second with eight. The Sailfish have used nine different athletes at the face off with senior Noah McKoeun taking the majority of the attempts. McKoeun is 146-of-281 (.520) this season while the next highest number of attempts has come from sophomore Refuglo Perez who is 21-of-48 (.438).
  • Sophomore Dylan Hunt leads the defensive side of the ball with 19 caused turnovers this season while scooping up 24 ground balls. Sophomore Christian Bond is second on the team with 14 caused turnovers while scooping up 20 ground balls. McKoeun leads the team with 62 ground balls this season. PBA has used three goalkeepers this season led by sophomore Ben Lightsey who has seen action is all 13 games with a 17.05 goals against average. He has made 119 saves in just over 626 minutes of work. He has compiled a 2-10 record in net.
  • HISTORY: Saturday's meeting will be the sixth contest all-time between the Sailfish and Mocs on the lacrosse field. The Mocs are 5-0 all-time versus PBA including a 20-8 victory last season at home. FSC is 2-0 in West Palm Beach including winning 19-10 in 2019 and 17-10 in 2021.
