Thomas' Grand Slam Leads Mocs to Doubleheader Split

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Junior Taylor Thomas leads Florida Southern College softball hitting a grand slam in game two to split the doubleheader against Embry-Riddle University on Saturday afternoon.

The Moccasins fell in game one of the doubleheader 4-1 before taking game two 6-3 over the Eagles. With the split, FSC moves to 24-23 overall and 11-16 in the Sunshine State Conference, while Embry-Riddle is now 24-20 on the year and 11-13 in the SSC.

FLORIDA SOUTHERN 1, EMBRY-RIDDLE 4
It was not until the top of the seventh when the Mocs tried to get a rally going, scoring one with two outs as graduate student Maddi Conner scored on an RBI single from sophomore Destiny Colgate.

The run was not enough for a Florida Southern rally as Embry-Riddle took game one 4-1 scoring two runs in the bottom of the third, one in the bottom of the fourth and an insurance run to earn the only win for the weekend.

Junior Skyler Ralstin led the Mocs in game one going 3-for-4 followed by Colgate going 2-for-4 and an RBI.

FLORIDA SOUTHERN 6, EMBRY-RIDDLE 3
The Mocs made up for the first game early in game two scoring four runs to take an early 4-0 lead with a Thomas grand slam. FSC opened up with junior Kiki Morris singling through the left side. Conner walked for the third time to move Morris into scoring position, Ralstin hit a sac bunt to move the runners and Colgate was walked to load the bases for a hot hitter Thomas.

Thomas had her first hit of the day and made it count with her first grand slam of the season to put the Mocs on the board early 4-0.

Freshman Kelly Keating kept the bats alive in the top of the second with a double to leadoff. Senior Kelsey Peck scored Keating switching spots with the third baseman on an RBI double to make it 5-0. Morris stepped up to the plate hitting an RBI double scoring Peck to put FSC up 6-0 after just two innings of action.

The Eagles scored in the bottom of the fourth taking away the shutout, and two additional runs in the sixth to try and close in on the Mocs but FSC defense finished the game winning the series 2-1.

Florida Southern was led by Keating in game two going a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, and one run. Morris went 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Thomas had just one hit but made it count in her grand slam bringing in four runners. In the circle, junior Mel Rogers added another win to her resume improving to 11-3 on the year with two strikeouts allowing just one earned run.
