WINTER PARK, Fla. - Kelsey Peck hits a grand slam in game one to tie a program record of 11 home runs in a season while leading Florida Southern College softball to a Sunshine State Conference split against Rollins College on Friday afternoon. The Moccasins captured a 9-7 win in game one of the doubleheader and fell in the final inning of game two, 6-5 to the Tars.
With the split, FSC is now 25-24 overall and 12-17 in the SSC, while Rollins sits 30-15 on the year and 14-12 in the conference.
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 9, ROLLINS 7
The Mocs attacked first to open up the final conference series scoring off a Tar's error to take an early 1-0 lead after just one inning of play. FSC continued to tack on more runs not allowing Rollins to score with an RBI single from junior
Skyler Ralstin to make it 2-0 in the top of the third, and later 4-0 as freshman
Kelly Keating doubled to left center field scoring sophomores
Destiny Colgate and
Cat Buckner.
In the bottom of the inning, the shutout ended as Rollins scored its first two runs on a homer to make it a 4-2 game.
Florida Southern had their best inning in the top of the fifth as junior
Taylor Thomas hit an RBI single up the middle to increase their lead to 5-2, but that was not where it ended for the Mocs. Peck hit her 11th homer of the season on a 1-2 count bringing in four runners for a grand slam and take a 9-2 lead over the Tars.
After the Peck grand slam, the runs stopped for FSC but Rollins tried to catch up with the Mocs, but it was too late as the Tars were able to come within two but the damage was already done as game one went to Florida Southern 9-7.
Peck led the way going 3-for-5 with two runs, four RBIs, a double, and a homer in the leadoff spot. Junior
Kiki Morris had a perfect 3-for-3 with one run scored and a double. Colgate, Thomas, and senior
Leanna Kelly all had two hits, and one run in the game, while Thomas had an RBI. In the circle, junior
Mel Rogers collected her 12th win pitching seven complete innings and striking out two batters.
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 5, ROLLINS 6
The Mocs looked to take the series but game two started out to be more of a challenge as Rollins put up a run early in the bottom of the second to make it 2-0 before FSC found their momentum.
In the top of the third, however; graduate student
Maddi Conner started the run with an RBI single through the left side that put FSC on the board trailing 2-1. In the same inning, Florida Southern took a 3-2 lead with back-to-back wild pitches.
The Mocs increased their lead to 5-2 on another Conner single this time to the right field for two RBIs. Florida Southern was able to keep the time until the final at-bat for the Tars as a two-run homer gave Rollins the edge to split the doubleheader 6-5.
Conner led the way in game two going 2-for-4 with one run and three RBIs, Peck also had two hits going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
