LAKELAND, Fla. - Florida Southern College men's soccer battled through the rain, a weather delay, and a wet field and ultimately came out on top against Nova Southeastern University late Saturday night with a 1-0 win. Prior to the Moccasins game, they were joined by members of the Auburndale Scream team that are a part of the Auburndale youth soccer club. The members of the club walked alongside the starters for the men's soccer team and stood with the athletes during the introduction and national anthem.Â
Â
The game could have finished in a tie between the Moccasins (3-2-3, 1-0-2 SSC) and Sharks (3-4-1, 0-3-1 SSC) but FSC gave it one final push and came away victorious, breaking a three-game losing cycle against NSU.
Â
Prior to the severe weather delay, it looked to be in favor of NSU but FSC's back line held strong only allowing three shots in the first half and not allowing a single shot on goal the entire match. After the delay, the Mocs had the momentum out of the locker room giving the Mocs the push they needed. Florida Southern answered with seven shots, three being on goal not giving up the rally.Â
Â
The Mocs waited until the last seconds of the game where junior midfielder
Jay Skelcher-Maxwell battled between two Nova Southeastern defenders and found sophomore midfielder
Dylan Lowther. Lowther finished the long night finding the back of the net just missing the Sharks keeper with just 12 seconds remaining in regulation. With little to no time left, FSC captured their first Sunshine State Conference win at home on Berend field with a 1-0 shutout.
Â
Both teams combined for 16 shots with the Mocs having the only shots on goal with three coming from Lowther, grad midfielder
Hunter Stroble, and sophomore defender
Pablo Overfeld.Â
Â
Florida Southern returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 4 as they take a short trip to Saint Leo University. The Mocs and Lion's first kick is set for 7:00 p.m.
