FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's soccer team fell to No. 24 Nova Southeastern University Saturday night by a score of 3-0 at the NSU Soccer Complex.
The Mocs (5-4-1, 1-2 SSC) could not match the pressure by Nova as each of their four shots on goal was saved by NSU. The Sharks (7-0-1, 4-0 SSC) were led by Tabea Schutt's hat trick and defense lockdown in the 3-0 loss for FSC.
Despite an early shot on goal by
Jasmin Adames, Nova Southeastern scored first after a goal by Schutt in the sixth minute of the first half.
Sierra Spirk, team leader in goals with four, nearly evened the match five minutes later, but the Sharks saved that again.
NSU continued to lay on the shots after a brief weather delay and extended the lead to two after a cross in the box deflected off the Mocs to find Schutt open for her second goal of the night. At the half, NSU had the lead 2-0 after two shots on goal by the Mocs, but both were saved compared to the seven shots faced by FSC keeper
Jenny Staten in the first.
Florida Southern continued the pressure early in the second half with shots on goal by
Morgan Elliott and Adames as NSU keeper Rosa continued to keep the Sharks up by two. Halfway through the second
Malia Brost had a great look with a free kick just outside the box and sent it just barely over the bar.
While the Mocs struggled to find the net, Nova Southeastern's Schutt finished her hat trick in the 74
th minute off a deep cross and header that went just past Staten's reach. NSU's defense continued to fend off the Mocs with no opportunity to score in the 3-0 loss.
The Mocs return to Lakeland to face Saint Leo University on Wednesday, Oct. 4, set for 7 p.m. at Berend Field.
