TAMPA, Fla. – Ashley Shimberg scored her fifth goal of the season as the Florida Southern College women's soccer team tied the University of Tampa by a 1-1 score on Wednesday night at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex.
Â
The Mocs (3-2-4, 0-1-3 SSC) scored in the opening 10 minutes of the match but were held from a win with Tampa's seven saves. The Spartans (4-1-3, 0-1-2 SSC) matched the Moccasin goal in the first half and only managed one more shot on goal in the conference tie.
Â
Despite an early shot by Tampa in the opening two minutes of the game, Florida Southern controlled the shots in the first half. Shimberg had her first shot on goal in the fifth minute, but that was saved by Tampa's Aidan Smith, the first of seven saves on the day for her.
Â
After a deep clear by the Mocs backline,
Anita Vera had a short pass to Shimberg, who hit the right post and got in for the first goal of the game in the 11
th minute. FSC continued to pressure with back-to-back shots on goal by Vera and Shimberg over the next 10 minutes before Ally Wold from Tampa tied the game in the 21
st minute.
Â
Shimberg had one more shot on goal for the first half as three late shots by Tampa all went wide to keep a 1-1 tie into halftime.
Â
The second half started more conservatively with a few traded shots, including one by
Ally Prentice, before a shot on goal by
Rilee Hasegawa which was saved. Shimberg added two more shots on goal before Tampa managed its second shot on goal for the night, though
Carly Brodsky was there for the save. A late shot by
Jamie Klein did not make it as the Mocs recorded their fourth tie of the season with Tampa by a 1-1 score.
Â
Florida Southern held the edge in shots, 10-to-9, but dominated in the shots on goal with eight to Tampa's two. Six of those eight goal-scoring opportunities came from Shimberg, the most in a single game in recorded history for the program. Brodsky finished with one save as Tampa's Smith tallied seven in the game.
Â
The Mocs will return to Lakeland for a long-awaited home game on Saturday, Oct. 19 against No. 18 Florida Tech set for a 7 p.m. start at Berend Field.
