Hasegawa Goal Not Enough Against #18 Panthers in 4-1 SSC Loss

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's soccer team was unable to recover from an early deficit with a 4-1 loss against No. 18 Florida Tech on Saturday night at Berend Field.

The Mocs (3-3-4, 0-2-3 SSC) were down by three goals into the start of the second half, though managed a goal by Rilee Hasegawa to avoid the shutout. The Panthers (7-2-1, 4-1-1 SSC) controlled most of the possession in the conference bout, with limited time for the Mocs to score in the FT win.

A one-sided game for most of the first half with Florida Southern struggling to get into the attacking zone against Florida Tech. Tech scored its first goal of the day in the ninth minute after one touch passes led to a short cross into the box and header by Ximena Jauregui to score first.

The Moccasins responded with a great opportunity by Hasegawa in the 21st minute, though that was saved by FT. Hasegawa nearly had a goal a few minutes later that hit the crossbar and was unable to go in. While FSC had a few shots in, the Panthers scored after a hard shot went through the hands of Carly Brodsky in the 33rd minute for a 2-0 Panther lead. Brodsky had a great save shortly after the allowed goal to send the game into halftime with a 2-0 FSC deficit.

A fast start for Florida Tech to start the second half led to a deep cross by Lauryn Wood and Sara Matchadji goal through the hands of the goalie, this time Lily O'Neil after an FSC keeper substitution at halftime. Fending off FT shots, FSC had its first goal after a great steal by Hasegawa went one-on-one for a laser goal and a 3-1 FT lead 60 minutes in.

The Panthers added a fourth goal in the 73rd minute with a solo FSC shot by Madison Male the final opportunities for the Mocs. Though a large deficit, Florida Southern had an opportunity to get several players with playing time with 17 substitutions by the Mocs.

Florida Southern was outshot 15-to-5, with an 8-to-2 FT advantage in shots on goal. The Mocs had four saves, three from O'Neil in the second half. In a tough battle on the pitch, FSC had 16 fouls, with another eight added by Tech in a highly contested conference match.

The Mocs will remain at home to host Eckerd in a rescheduled hurricane game on Tuesday, Oct. 22, set for a 7 p.m. start on Berend Field.
